– For the second time in his career, Fabio Scherer has lost a driver’s seat in the DTM. In 2026, he will be replaced in the Ford Mustang GT3 of the Haupt Racing Team (HRT) by newcomer Finn Wiebelhaus. However, the Swiss driver will still remain with the racing team from Drees at the Nürburgring. However, his focus is shifting to endurance racing.

Thus, Scherer is part of HRT’s driver squad for the races on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife and will compete in the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring in a GT3 car for the first time.
Furthermore, Scherer will also compete for HRT in the Endurance Cup of the GT World Challenge Europe. The highlight of the season there is the 24 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps at the end of June.
Sportingly disappointing year in the DTM
“I am really looking forward to the 2026 season and the continued collaboration with HRT and Ford,” says Scherer. “The Ford Mustang GT3 is a fascinating vehicle, and the races on the Nordschleife as well as in the GT World Challenge Europe are among the highlights in GT racing. I am highly motivated to fight for top results together with the team.”
Scherer was unable to fight for those very top results in the DTM last year. In his first season in a GT3 car, the Swiss driver struggled with the transition to the car and the DTM format. In 16 races, he finished in the points only four times and ended the season in 23rd place in the overall standings.

On the long-distance circuit, however, Scherer has proven his skills several times in recent years. For example, he was the winner of the LMP2 class at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2023 – despite a foot injury.
Track record on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife
And he also managed to impress during his first outings with the Ford Mustang GT3 on the Nordschleife. During qualifying for the season finale of the Nürburgring Endurance Series (NLS) last October, he set a new qualifying record with a lap time of 7:48,717 minutes and finished the race on the overall podium.
Accordingly, HRT Managing Director Ulrich Fritz is happy about the fact that Scherer will remain with the team this year. “We are very happy that Fabio is still with us in the team in 2026 – not only sportingly, but also personally. He brings exactly the passion and the ambition needed for such a demanding program.”
