Racing technology for the road: The Honda Civic Type R HRC is set to go into production in 2027

While official confirmations from the manufacturer are still pending, media reports are already painting a detailed picture of the planned production version.

The coverage, led by Response, describes more than just a show car with extreme aerodynamics. If the information is correct, Honda’s front-wheel-drive top model could receive a lot of technology from the brand’s motorsport division with technical components from endurance racing.

Production model allegedly planned for 2027

Response reports that the HRC variant is set to launch in 2027 based on a revised FL5 Civic Type R. Honda is expected to present this facelift before the end of the year.

HRC, the Honda Racing Corporation, is responsible for Honda’s engagements in Formula 1, MotoGP, and Super GT. The abbreviation is therefore more likely to stand for competition-related components rather than a pure styling package. Type-R development chief Hideki Kakinuma is said to have focused the project on balanced improvements rather than purely chasing a Nürburgring lap time.

The concept car from the Tokyo Auto Salon is already serving as a rolling test vehicle in a Japanese endurance series. There, aerodynamics, cooling, and engine components are being developed that could later flow into a road model.

Officially, nothing has been confirmed so far. Anyone comparing a future Civic Type R HRC with the current model is still operating based on rumors rather than technical data.

How racing technology could change the FL5

The concept already shows the visual direction: a larger air intake at the front, double air guide elements, an extended spoiler lip, larger endplates on the rear wing, a more distinctive diffuser, and a radiator with the HRC logo behind the lower grille. The show car also features an Akrapovič exhaust system.

Previous rumors about the technology include a revised suspension setup, larger brakes, forged wheels, and the use of more carbon. Compared to the production model, the weight could drop by around 20 kilograms. Some reports also mention a possible connection to the HRC-K20C engine from the Super Taikyu series, but Honda has not confirmed this link.

Before its discontinuation in the European market, the 2.0-liter four-cylinder in the FL5 Type R produced 330 hp. Japanese reports suggest a moderate increase towards 340 hp, achieved through software adjustments as well as changes to the intake and exhaust system.

In Japan, a price of around 7 million yen is speculated for the HRC, roughly equivalent to 40,000 euros. The current Civic Type R there costs about 6.18 million yen. The surcharge would thus be approximately 4,300 euros at the current exchange rate. For the ears of German Civic Type R buyers, this must sound like a mockery, as the car cost nearly 60,000 euros in Germany.
