Compact class duel: Opel Astra and VW Golf in direct comparison

The recently revised Astra as part of a model refresh relies on an even more distinctive design, an extremely broad engine range, and updated technology. The Golf, on the other hand, continues to score with its proverbial solidity, high build quality, and a comprehensive drivetrain program.

Exterior

The Opel Astra appears with an independent design, characterized by the front in Opel Vizor look with a black high-gloss bar, the distinctive headlights, and the illuminated Opel compass. With the latest model refresh, the new Intelli-Lux HD headlights were also added, consisting of a total of 50,000 LEDs that can continuously adapt the light beam to road conditions.

The dimensions of the hatchback are 4.37 meters in length, 1.86 meters in width, and 1.46 meters in height. It also stands on a wheelbase of 2.68 meters.

The VW Golf, on the other hand, follows a more conservative line. The 2024 facelift has gently further developed an already highly appreciated design without fundamentally changing it: The front features narrower LED headlights, a new horizontal light signature, and a newly designed grille, while the side profile remains immediately recognizable as a Golf.

The dimensions are somewhat more compact than the Astra: 4.28 meters length, 1.79 meters width, 1.48 meters height, and a wheelbase of 2.632 meters.

Interior

The interior of the Opel Astra remains modern but straightforwardly designed. The dashboard houses the dual display for the digital instrument cluster and the infotainment system, both graphically revised and easy to operate.

Special features include the Intelli-Seat seats, which are designed to improve comfort on long journeys thanks to their special upholstery shape. Optionally, AGR-certified seats with electric adjustment, ventilation, heating, and massage function are available.

The trunk volume in conventional versions is from 422 liters, while the plug-in hybrids offer 368 liters. When the rear seat backs are folded down, the loading volume increases to 1,339 liters.

The Volkswagen Golf, on the other hand, continues to stand out with a particularly ergonomic interior. The cockpit is clearly designed, tidy, and made with high-quality materials, in the tradition of the model. The digital instrument cluster with 10.2 inches works together with the central display with 12.9 inches.

Ergonomics also benefit from the revised operation of the infotainment, which is now more intuitive than in the first versions of the eighth generation. The trunk offers a minimum volume of 381 liters in the classic variants and around 273 liters in the plug-in hybrid versions.

Engines and Drivetrains

The Opel Astra offers one of the most complete programs in the segment. The entry-level is the 1.2-liter three-cylinder petrol engine with mild hybrid technology and 107 kW in combination with a 6-speed automatic, followed by the 1.5-liter turbo diesel with 96 kW and 8-speed automatic. The range also includes the plug-in hybrid with 143 kW. It combines a 1.6-liter turbo petrol engine and a battery with more than 17 kWh, enabling an electric range of up to 83 kilometers according to WLTP.

Those looking for a fully electric car will find an alternative in the Astra Electric. It is equipped with a front motor with 115 kW and a battery with 58 kWh and achieves up to 454 kilometers of range.

The VW Golf also offers a very broad range. The 1.5 TSI petrol engines are available with 85 and 110 kW, both in conventional form and as mild hybrid eTSI with 48-volt technology and 7-speed DSG (6-speed manual in entry-level variants).

The proven 2.0 TDI with 85 or 110 kW remains in the program, still counting among the best diesels in the class when it comes to consumption and high mileage.

The plug-in hybrids are among the strengths of the Golf. The eHybrid versions with 150 kW and GTE with 200 kW use the new 1.5 TSI in combination with a battery with 19.7 kWh, enabling an electric range of up to around 140 kilometers according to WLTP – a top value in this segment. They also support charging with up to 11 kW AC and up to 50 kW DC.

The range also includes the new full hybrid with 125 kW, which combines the 1.5 TSI evo2 with two electric motors and a 1.6 kWh battery that is charged during driving. For performance fans, the sporty GTI with 195 kW, the GTI Edition 50 with 239 kW, and the Golf R with 245 kW and 4Motion all-wheel drive remain available.

Prices

The Opel Astra starts at 32,990 euros as Edition Mild Hybrid with 107 kW. The diesel with 131 hp costs from 34,640 euros, while the plug-in hybrid with 196 hp costs at least 38,460 euros. The fully electric Astra Electric variant is offered from 37,990 euros.

The VW Golf, on the other hand, starts at 29,835 euros as Trend with 1.5 TSI and 115 hp. The mild hybrid eTSI versions start at 34,560 euros, while the diesel with 116 hp is available from 33,435 euros. The Golf eHybrid with 204 hp costs at least 44,670 euros, and the new full hybrid with 170 hp starts at 41,400 euros.
