– Former Formula 1 driver Jolyon Palmer is convinced that George Russell possesses a “hard-as-nails facet.” This trait could prove decisive in the internal Mercedes duel against Kimi Antonelli. Currently, Mercedes is tied in season victories after the Japanese Grand Prix, if the sprint from China is taken into account.

But while Russell is an established winner, the young Italian Antonelli made history in Suzuka when he was crowned the youngest championship leader of all time at the age of 19. Given the current dominance of the Silver Arrow package, both drivers are already considered the top favorites for the 2026 world championship title.
In the podcast F1 Nation, Palmer discussed with James Hinchcliffe and Tom Clarkson whether a team-internal escalation looms in 2026, reminiscent of the legendary rivalry between Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton.
Palmer: “Russell won’t play the nice uncle”
“I am of the opinion that George still has the upper hand at the moment,” Palmer clarifies. The Briton does not accept that Russell lacks the necessary fire for a duel of the caliber of Rosberg versus Hamilton: “I disagree with that. I’ve watched George in the junior categories. I know that this guy possesses an incredible toughness.”

According to Palmer, Russell will mark his territory as soon as the championship crown is at stake: “When the pressure rises and the title is within reach, he definitely has what it takes to throw everything into the balance to come out on top in the end. I don’t think he will play the ‘nice uncle’ to Kimi all the time. Then it depends on how Kimi reacts – and we haven’t seen enough of that yet, have we?”

Hinchcliffe skeptical: Is Antonelli too green for psychological warfare?
James Hinchcliffe agrees with Palmer regarding the assessment of Russell, but expresses doubts about Antonelli’s role in this potential psychological warfare: “As far as George is concerned, I agree with you. But it always takes two to tango.”

The Canadian does not believe that the youngster is already ready for a frontal attack on the team leader: “Kimi is 19 years old, in his second year, and under extreme scrutiny. It would shock me if he thinks he can take control there immediately.”
“I don’t even know if he’s wired that way,” Hinchcliffe continues. “He seems like the nicest guy in the world. I haven’t seen those traits in him that you recognized in George in the junior series. Even if they were present: in his current situation, attacking George Russell internally would be damn risky. I just don’t think he has it in him. These are two completely different personalities.”
