– Surprise visit from Fabio Scherer at the DTM: The Swiss driver, who made his DTM comeback last year in the HRT-Ford but had to give up his cockpit this year for rookie Finn Wiebelhaus, was spotted in the paddock during the DTM weekend at the Nürburgring and is apparently striving for a return to the traditional series.

“It’s cool to be here again,” says the 27-year-old at ran.de. “Of course, I would rather be driving, but that’s part of it too. Let’s see what the future brings.” He enjoys being at the DTM at the Nürburgring because of the atmosphere – “and I hope it comes back,” Scherer emphasizes his comeback intentions.
Scherer already completed a DTM season in 2020 in the then manufacturer DTM with the Audi customer team WRT, then focused on prototypes and sensationally won the LMP2 class at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2023 with a broken foot.
No luck at the 24h race for the record holder
Before the 2025 season, he decided at short notice to reorient himself towards GT3 racing and returned to the DTM without prior GT3 experience, which has been running with GT3 cars since 2021 and is known for its high level. Considering this – and the fact that he did not test before the season – he acquitted himself honorably.
At the penultimate race weekend in Spielberg, he almost secured the first Ford Mustang GT3 podium in the DTM, if not for technical problems.

This season Scherer is competing on the Nürburgring Nordschleife, where he still holds the NLS lap record. At the 24-hour race, he was also one of the crowd favorites thanks to the popular Ford Mustang GT3 Evo. After positioning himself in the top field during the top qualifying, he did not get to race because his friend and former DTM teammate Arjun Maini slipped early on an oil slick.
Leading laps at the 24h of Spa-Francorchamps
Scherer is also competing this year for HRT in the GT World Challenge Europe (GTWCE) endurance series: Together with Maini and the Frenchman Thomas Drouet, he shares the HRT-Ford used in the professional category.
At the GTWCE race in Monza, the car even started from pole, but already in the first corner the HRT-Ford became a victim of a mass collision. Scherer also had little luck at the 24 Hours of Spa, as the HRT-Ford retired due to a technical problem.
However, Scherer was even leading at times and impressed with strong lap times: During his two night stints, he and Winward-Mercedes driver Maro Engel pulled away from the field at the front. His next outing is now the GTWCE home race of the Ford team HRT this weekend at the Nürburgring.
