– Formula 1 officially released the race calendar for the 2027 season on Wednesday. As expected, it includes a total of 24 Grands Prix, including the races in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, which had to be canceled this year. New, however, is the number of sprints.

After Formula 1 boss Stefano Domenicali had already announced plans to hold more sprint races, it is now confirmed that there will be a whopping ten of them in 2027 – more than ever before in the premier class. The venues are also exciting.
For example, in 2027, a sprint will take place in Monaco for the first time. This is quite surprising because Monte Carlo has often been cited in the past as an example of tracks where sprints are actually not very sensible due to poor overtaking opportunities.
New is also the sprint at the season finale, which is again scheduled to take place in Abu Dhabi next year. At the Yas Marina Circuit, a sprint race will also take place for the first time, increasing the likelihood that the 2027 world champion will be crowned on a Saturday.
Because Brazil (21st race of the season) and Qatar (23rd) are also on the sprint calendar, sprints will take place at three of the last four race weekends. Additional short races will be held at the season opener in Bahrain, Melbourne, Suzuka, Montreal, Silverstone, and Monza. Bahrain, Australia, and Japan will also host a sprint for the first time.
A statement from Formula 1 says: “Due to the ongoing success and strong demand for this format, the number of sprint events for 2027 has been increased from six to ten, allowing fans, organizers, broadcasters, and partners to experience even more exciting competitions throughout the season.”
Test in Bahrain, no clarity on 2026 season finale
Aside from that, the calendar includes exactly the 24 races that were already known. This means that the world championship rounds in Barcelona and Zandvoort are no longer included compared to the 2026 calendar, while Portimao (June 20) and Istanbul (October 3) make their return.

“We are very pleased to welcome Portugal and Turkey to the championship and to expand the sprint races to ten events to offer our fans even more excitement, drama, and wheel-to-wheel action – all that makes our sport so special,” said Formula 1 boss Domenicali.
The “winter schedule” of Formula 1 was also announced in this context. In 2027, only a four-day test is planned before the opener in Bahrain at the same location. It will take place from February 24 to 27, with the new season starting two weeks later. The finale in Abu Dhabi is scheduled for December 12.

It remains unclear whether the 2026 season finale can take place as planned. Formula 1 itself insists that the races in Qatar and Abu Dhabi are to be held as scheduled until further notice.
According to information from Motorsport-Total.com, preparations are already underway in Imola to alternatively host the season finale on the Abu Dhabi weekend – for the likely case that neither of the two races in the Middle East can take place due to the ongoing conflict in the region.
Formula 2 has already added an additional race in Baku to its race calendar, which could be a sign that preparations are being made for a possible cancellation of the two races in Qatar and Abu Dhabi.
