MotoGP live ticker Spielberg: Martin wins sprint after Acosta crash

There was a lot going on this Super Saturday, from the duel between Jorge Martin and Marc Marquez at the start of the sprint to Pedro Acosta’s crash and Martin’s comeback and victory. The Spaniard is now three points ahead of Marquez in the World Championship, but everything can change again tomorrow.

Unlike usual, Sunday does not start with the MotoGP warm-up but directly with a title decision, namely in the second race of the Baggers. After that, three more races with the World Championship classes are on the program. In our ticker, you won’t miss anything as always, even though we say goodbye for today. See you tomorrow!

Oscar Gutierrez wins the first race of the Bagger World Cup this weekend in Spielberg. He beats Archie McDonald, who finishes second. Both are the only riders still able to win the title after Andrea Iannone and Eric Granado collided in the second lap. The race direction has launched an investigation. Iannone faces a penalty.

The two guest starters James Riscoli and Kyle Wyman make an impression in third and fourth place. Jake Lewis completes the top 5. Before the title-deciding race tomorrow, McDonald leads Gutierrez by 21 points.

Jorge Martin (Aprilia/1st): “Today I really enjoyed the race. Of course, I was a bit lucky with Pedro’s crash, otherwise I would have been second.”

“We had a good start, but in the first lap, we were pretty much at the limit. So I thought my chances were over. But I never gave up throughout the race. I pushed to the maximum and tried to stay highly focused. Coming from further back and winning in the end is just great. I am very happy for my team because they really deserved this success. Now we are ready for tomorrow, and I hope we can keep this pace there as well.”

Marc Marquez (Ducati/2nd): “The goal for today was third place in the sprint. I didn’t want to lose too many points to Jorge because I had already seen in practice that Pedro and Jorge had better pace. Now I finished right behind Jorge. We were a bit lucky with Pedro’s mistake, but I am satisfied and ready for tomorrow.”

Marco Bezzecchi (Aprilia/3rd): “I am very happy. The race was tough because I didn’t have the pace of the top riders like Marc, Pedro, and Jorge. But I never gave up at any point and tried to stay as close as possible. In the end, I was a bit lucky with Pedro’s mistake, but suddenly I was up front. It was important for me to get a good result. I am very happy, and we will try to improve further for tomorrow.”

In the end, Martin’s comeback is rewarded: After Acosta’s retirement, he wins the sprint and regains the World Championship lead from Marc Marquez. The Ducati rider finishes second. Bezzecchi completes the top 3.

Ogura overtakes Alex Marquez in the final phase and secures a strong fourth place in his injury comeback. The remaining points go to Bagnaia, Zarco, Aldeguer, and Binder. Di Giannantonio narrowly misses out in tenth place.

Unbelievable! In the chicane, Acosta goes straight on completely overpaced and buries his comfortable lead in the gravel. Martin, who was only seventh after the first lap, now leads the race. One second behind is Marc Marquez, who has managed to pull away a bit from Bezzecchi again.

Martin is not noticeably closing in on Acosta. The KTM rider continues to dominate the race from the front. Morbidelli causes the first crash in the backfield. Three laps to go.

Marc Marquez now has to look behind and defend third place against Bezzecchi. One thing is certain: If Martin stays ahead of him, he will take over the World Championship lead again.

Just one lap later, Martin repeats his move on Marc Marquez in turn 1, who can hardly defend himself. Martin is now second. Is the remaining race distance enough to catch Acosta? The gap is a little over two and a half seconds.

The seventh lap begins, and in turn 1, Martin sets up to overtake Bezzecchi. He is now back on podium course. Will the revenge on Marc Marquez follow next? He cannot keep up with Acosta’s pace. He has almost a two-second lead.

Martin continues to gain places. Past Ogura and Alex Marquez, he is now already fourth. The next rider on his list is teammate Bezzecchi.

Not many laps have been completed yet, but some riders have already received track limits warnings, including Martin. Moreira and Fernandez have to take the long lap twice. They made a false start.

Acosta is the only one in the field to run 1:28 times and immediately builds a buffer against Marc Marquez. Behind him are Bezzecchi and Alex Marquez. A small gap has opened to Ogura. Martin is putting pressure behind him. He has overtaken Bagnaia.

Marc Marquez makes a mistake himself in turn 3. Acosta benefits and takes the lead ahead of Marc, Bezzecchi, Alex Marquez, Ogura, and Bagnaia. Martin is only seventh after the skirmish at the start.
