We were just talking about the overtakes, a total of 60 in Miami and so on.

Fittingly, Formula 1 has just released a compilation of Lewis Hamilton’s overtakes on Twitter.

So you can watch a few right now:

This morning we reported that Sky will make the races in Imola and Budapest freely accessible to all Formula 1 fans.

Our editor-in-chief Christian Nimmervoll has summarized all the information in a video:

The Miami Grand Prix had the most overtakes in a race so far with 60. An incredible number!

Reddit user u/catchingisonething calculated this and came up with the following list:

Bahrain: 37
Saudi Arabia: 36
Australia: 29
Azerbaijan (Sprint): 20
Azerbaijan (Main Race): 23
Miami: 60

The list of overtakes only includes those that happened on track, without position changes in the first lap after a standing start. Overtakes due to pit stops, team orders, etc., are also not included.

The Reddit user also found other statistics:

– Max Verstappen showed the most overtakes in the race with eight; he is also the only driver who has not been overtaken himself this season.
– Kevin Magnussen and Valtteri Bottas were overtaken seven times, more than anyone else.
– Max Verstappen has overtaken 19 times this season – no one has more.
– With 22 overtakes, Nico Hülkenberg has had the most cars pass him this season so far.

Now, overtakes are not an indicator of entertaining races in my opinion; most of them in Miami also came about through DRS.

Would a sensational transfer in Formula 1 have almost happened?

As “F1-Insider.com” reports, Mercedes reached out to Red Bull chief designer Adrian Newey. Shortly before his contract extension with the Milton Keynes team, there was reportedly a call from a former Red Bull employee, who had since become Toto Wolff’s personal assistant.

Wolff apparently tasked her with motivating Newey to switch to Mercedes, but he declined and subsequently signed a multi-year contract with Red Bull.

That would have been something if Newey had also designed the future Mercedes cars.

The former BMW Motorsport Director worked with many legendary personalities during his time in Formula 1: Frank Williams, Patrick Head, Peter Sauber, but also with drivers like Nick Heidfeld, Robert Kubica, and Sebastian Vettel.

It’s always fascinating when he talks about the “good old days” and the less good times. This interview is in English, but I’ll have a German recommendation for you in a moment.

Max Verstappen is currently the benchmark in Formula 1. The Red Bull driver presents his teammate Sergio Perez and the rest of the field with seemingly insurmountable challenges.

Pierre Gasly, Daniil Kvyat, Alexander Albon, Daniel Ricciardo – they all bit their teeth on the Dutchman and were no longer part of Red Bull Racing sooner or later.

In the new episode of the Formula 1 podcast “Starting Grid”, editor-in-chief Christian Nimmervoll and I, led by moderator Sophie Affeldt, had a heated discussion about Pierre Gasly.

The Frenchman was with Red Bull Racing in 2019 and was dropped after only 12 races. In Austria and Hungary, he was lapped by his then-teammate Max Verstappen and ultimately replaced by Alexander Albon. His best finish was a fourth place at the British Grand Prix, which was not enough for Dr. Helmut Marko, Christian Horner, and Red Bull, which is why he was sent back to the sister team AlphaTauri, then still Toro Rosso.

Since then, Gasly has had a tough time with Nimmervoll. I drew his attention to this, whereupon he once again listed the most important facts, which I, out of sympathy for Gasly, could not leave in their raw state – and perhaps did not want to. The Frenchman’s character development in recent years impresses me; his performances also improved year by year, and in 2020, he even won the Italian Grand Prix for AlphaTauri.

This season, Gasly left the Red Bull squad and joined Alpine. The reason for the discussion was precisely what I just wrote about. Laurent Rossi’s statements led us to put Alpine to the test in general. The inferior quality of the drivers compared to other teams was also discussed. For Nimmervoll, Alpine would rather have to look in the drawer of a Lando Norris; with Ocon and Gasly, the ambitious goals can hardly, if at all, be achieved.

Alpine CEO Laurent Rossi really let loose during the Miami weekend on Canal+. The word “amateurish” slipped out of his mouth regarding the work of the Alpine Formula 1 team. Slipped? Hardly, because Rossi sees things slipping away. The alarm signal had to be set.

However, if you observe and listen to Alpine team principal Otmar Szafnauer now, it all doesn’t seem as bad as his boss portrays it: “When we read something like that on paper, it doesn’t put any further pressure on us,” Szafnauer emphasizes. “Everyone here wants to do well. We have a lot of experience, technicians, and engineers at the highest level, and we put ourselves under pressure. So we just have to fix it.”

But that still sounds like a tough task, because the bold statements from the launch of the Alpine A523 in London, that they want to catch up with the top teams, have now faded.

“All we can do when we have problems like in Baku is to find the root cause and understand why it happened, and make sure we either change the process or the people so it doesn’t happen again,” says Szafnauer.

Well, let’s hope he doesn’t get changed himself soon.

It’s not Sky’s first attempt to make Formula 1 accessible to everyone on YouTube.

The 2020 Eifel Grand Prix was also shown in full length on YouTube, but via the official Formula 1 YouTube account. At that time, the race was held with a reduced number of spectators due to the Corona pandemic.

“Fun fact” on the side: because the incidence rate in Bonn had climbed to 35 a few days earlier, I couldn’t attend the race at the time, because the organizers considered this number decisive for not being allowed to come. What times those were.

Good news for all Formula 1 fans!

Sky will show the races from Imola and Hungary free for everyone on the Sky Sport YouTube channel. The pay-TV broadcaster announced this today in a press release. This means Formula 1 fans will be able to enjoy Sky’s live coverage directly at the upcoming race, the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix from the traditional Imola circuit.

Charly Classen, Head of Sport Sky Germany, says about this announcement: “Society is changing in its media consumption, streaming is gaining relevance. With the additional offer of Formula 1 live broadcasts via skysport.de, the Sky Sport App, and on our Sky Sport DE YouTube channel, we are reacting to these changes. We see ourselves with our reporting as ambassadors of a great sport and want to share our enthusiasm with as many fans as possible!”

The broadcast will begin on Sunday with the pre-race reports for Imola, the race itself will then be available live and in full length via skysport.de, the Sky Sport App, and the Sky Sport YouTube channel.
