30 minutes until the start. The pit lane is closed, and all 21 drivers except Perez, who starts from the pit, have made it to the starting grid. As always, we will only find out who starts on which tires immediately before the start.

Expert Anthony Davidson also believes that a preliminary decision could already be made at the start. On Sky, the former Formula 1 driver says that if Leclerc takes the lead in Turn 1, “I can’t imagine anyone else being able to beat him.”

Conversely, Norris absolutely has to hold the lead in his opinion.

Because overtaking in Hungary is traditionally difficult, according to Damon Hill, the very first corner will be important. On F1 TV, the 1996 world champion explains: “If you have a good start, you can dictate the strategy.”

“You can make life difficult for the others,” says Hill. Juan Pablo Montoya agrees and adds that the run to the first corner here in Budapest is extremely long.

“If you go inside, the track is dirty. If you go outside, you’re on the clean side, but someone could dive in on the inside. You have to survive that first corner,” says Montoya.

As an official round of the FIA and FIM Drag Racing European Championship, more than 250 teams compete in over 20 classes. On the Rico Anthes Quartermile, Top Fuel Dragsters and bikes with over 10,000 hp, acceleration values under four seconds, and top speeds of more than 500 km/h provide motorsport of the highest class.

The program is complemented by the open paddock, hot seats, dealer mile, and the spectacular Saturday night show with jet dragsters, pyrotechnics, and a light show.

The polesitter is confident before the start and explains that it’s about making “no mistakes.” “We have good pace in the car. It’s a long race, tire wear could be high,” he explains.

Therefore, he first needs a “good start,” and then he’ll see. He also reminds that McLaren has always been strong in Hungary in recent years.

The starting grid has changed again. The setup on Sergio Perez’s Cadillac was modified after qualifying. That’s why the Mexican has to start from the pit lane. However, he had already finished 22nd and thus last in qualifying anyway.

There was a premiere in the Formula 2 race just now. Noel Leon triumphed and thus won his first main race in the junior series today, after two sprint races.

In the championship, Red Bull junior Nikola Tsolov’s seventh place was enough to slightly extend his lead again. Oliver Goethe remained without points in 18th.

Formula 1 has found a replacement race for the canceled Bahrain Grand Prix and returns to Malaysia after a nine-year break. The rescheduled date at the Sepang International Circuit near Kuala Lumpur is set for October 4, 2026.

Curious: Officially, the race will be held under the name “Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia” – i.e., as the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia. Reportedly, Bahrain is said to be investing a lot and contributing to being able to host “its” Grand Prix in 2026.

The Hungaroring is often compared to Monaco because overtaking here is traditionally difficult. In fact, none of the last five races in Budapest have been won from pole position.

Lewis Hamilton last achieved this in 2020. Since then, the winner has always come from further back; in 2022, Max Verstappen even triumphed from P10. In 2025, winner Lando Norris started from P3.

Can the McLaren driver end this black streak today?

We already talked about the strategy earlier. Interesting in this context: Because Ferrari drove with a medium in Q1 yesterday, Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton no longer have a fresh medium for the race.

However, Hamilton is the only driver from the top teams who still has a new set of soft tires. In addition, all top drivers still have two fresh sets of hard tires, which at least leaves open the possibility of a two-stop strategy.

Actually, for many years, the Hungaroring was considered a track with comparatively high grip and a very even surface. But the recent renovation work has turned out to be the exact opposite.

A newly asphalted third of the track is causing massive discontent among drivers and teams. The accumulated criticism finally erupted during the drivers’ briefing on Friday evening.

Alexander Albon is driving his 100th race for Williams today. He is thus the first driver in the history of the racing team to break this magical barrier.

Apart from that, there probably won’t be much reason for joy at Williams today. From P18 and P19, points are almost impossible.
