After a thorough review of the accident at the SportsCar Endurance Grand Prix last Sunday, the race stewards penalized the Penske Porsche #6 (L. Vanthoor/Estre) and its driver based on the IMSA sporting regulations 2026 as follows:
1. Post-race time penalty: Porsche Penske Motorsport #6 receives a time penalty for causing a collision according to Article 57.3.5, equivalent to a five-minute stop-and-go penalty. The #6 drops from P17 to P20, or from P8 to P10 in the GTP class.
2. Driver on probation: Kevin Estre is placed on probation for two races for taking disproportionate risk according to Articles 30.2.4 and 57.3.3. IMSA explicitly emphasizes that further offenses during this period may lead to a race suspension.
The drama unfolded in the final minutes of the race on the 6.514-kilometer circuit in Elkhart Lake. About ten minutes before the end, Estre and Aitken were engaged in a fierce battle for second place behind the leader Filipe Albuquerque. There had already been several contacts before the caution.

As the GTP field accelerated onto the start-finish straight for the last restart and approached Turn 1, the two rivals came too close again in the fight before Turn 1. Due to the contact, both vehicles slid at high speed into the track barriers. This abruptly ended the race for both. The resulting yellow phase ended the race.
IMSA Road America 2026: 6 Hours in 41 Minutes
The yellow phase cleared the way for Filipe Albuquerque and his teammate Ricky Taylor in the Wayne Taylor Racing Cadillac #10, who calmly steered the victory to the finish.
Estre and Aitken were classified in eighth and ninth place in the GTP class. The post-race five-minute time penalty sealed a bitter weekend for the crew of the #6 Porsche, while the 2026 championship heads into the final stretch. Aitken’s lead over Laurin Heinrich in the championship increased from 108 to 118 due to the gained position.
