Porsche 911 claims top position in the shrinking EU market

(Motorsport-Total.com/Motor1) – The automotive world is full of icons. These can be small cars, like the Mini or the VW Beetle, or large vehicles like American pick-ups. There are also unique and exclusive models for specific markets, such as the Japanese Kei-Cars.

Among these icons are also the famous sports cars that have accompanied us for many years. Thanks to a loyal fan base and careful visual updates, they have survived to this day. Among them, probably none is as enduring as the Porsche 911, probably the most iconic sports car in the world.

60 years of success story

For more than 60 years, the Stuttgart-based car has been on the market and is still considered a benchmark in the industry. It is neither the fastest nor the most visually fascinating car. Nor is it the most expensive or exclusive sports car you can buy.

Its success is based on staying true to its roots and the original concept. This connection to the past has allowed the Porsche 911 to evolve over eight generations – another evolutionary stage is already on the way. It is one of the very few models in the automotive industry that has maintained its position for so long.

Still the best-selling sports car in Europe

Porsche’s success is not only reflected in its long history. Sales figures, especially in Europe, also underline its ongoing popularity. Data from Dataforce via the Ask Dataforce AI tool show that the 911 easily defended its leading position among sports cars in Europe in the first half of this year.

Although sales of these vehicles fell by 10 percent to 22,649 units in the first six months of 2026, the iconic Porsche series grew. The Swabians registered 13,182 Porsche 911s new in the region, an increase of 0.7 percent compared to the first half of 2025. This made it once again by a wide margin the best-selling sports car on the continent, accounting for 58 percent of the entire segment. In other words: almost six out of ten sports cars sold in Europe are a Porsche 911.

Holding its own despite competition from SUV coupes

This result gains even more significance when considering the situation in the segment. Sports cars have always been a niche in sales figures, mainly due to high prices and limited everyday usability. They are vehicles for a limited buyer group. However, the SUV boom and its expansion into other segments through so-called SUV coupes influence the popularity of coupes and convertibles.

Between January and June, sales of these vehicles declined in 18 of the 34 countries analyzed by Dataforce. Germany, as the most important market, recorded a decrease of twelve percent to 8,612 units. Following is the United Kingdom with 3,541 units and a decline of nine percent, while Italy ranks third with 2,368 units and a decrease of two percent. Switzerland has overtaken France and thus become the fourth most important market. On the other hand, sales increased by eleven percent in Poland, 24 percent in Hungary, and 56 percent in Bulgaria.

Mild-hybrid sports cars increase

Also interesting is the contribution of mild-hybrid sports cars. According to the data, this drive type was the only one with growth, reaching 7,437 units, which corresponds to an increase of 37 percent compared to the first half of 2025. However, this was offset by a 24 percent decline in conventional gasoline versions, which make up 55 percent of the entire segment.
