(Motorsport-Total.com/Motor1) – You can think what you want about Luce – but Ferrari did one thing right: The exterior design remained secret until the very end. This is rare today, where embargos are often little respected and images leak in the battle for clicks. Now the covers have fallen – and the internet is already buzzing with discussions about the brand’s first electric car.

One of the best-suited people to talk about Ferrari is Luca di Montezemolo. He is much more than just a former employee. From 1991 to 2014, he was CEO – and thus the longest-serving boss of the post-Enzo era. It was even the “Commendatore” himself who brought di Montezemolo to the legendary Italian brand as an assistant in the early 1970s.
Over the decades, Montezemolo held several top positions at Ferrari and the then parent company Fiat. In 2014, he stepped down as President and Chairman of Ferrari – but given his long time in Maranello, it was almost inevitable that journalists would ask him about the now revealed electric car.
In an interview with the press, the 78-year-old ex-Ferrari boss shared his ruthless assessment of the Luce this week. However, he still tried to remain diplomatic. The Italian news agency askanews quoted di Montezemolo as saying:
“If I said what I really think, I would be doing Ferrari a disservice. We risk destroying a legend, and I really regret that. I hope they at least remove the prancing horse from this car.”

Ironically, apart from the usual emblems at the front and rear, customers can configure the Luce with a silver “Cavallino Rampante” on the front doors. Alternatively, the electric car is available with Scuderia Ferrari emblems on the front fenders. Although the configurator does not allow both at the same time, it is obvious that Ferrari wants to make it unmistakably clear from the side view which brand this car belongs to.

That was not the end of di Montezemolo’s otherwise brief comment on Ferrari’s first series model without an internal combustion engine. His open design criticism also contained an indirect jab: “[The Luce] is at least a car that the Chinese will not copy.”
It goes without saying that this statement is unlikely to be well received by Ferrari’s management in Maranello. It is rare for a former top manager to find such clear words about a new product of a former employer. On the other hand, this is a historic moment – not only for Ferrari but for the automotive industry as a whole.

Whether you love it or hate it: The Luce represents a radical design change and looks completely different from any Ferrari model of the past or present. We admit: Without the emblems, it would be almost impossible for us to identify it as a Ferrari. Even the V12-powered Purosangue still feels familiar – like an SUV interpretation of the Roma. The Luce, on the other hand, feels like a foreign body in the current portfolio.
In the end, only whether the car sells counts. We cannot predict that – we clearly do not belong to the target group. But wealthy buyers often have a very unique taste, so you never know …
