In Canada, Russell and Antonelli increased the intensity with their first real wheel-to-wheel duel. The scene ended with a slight touch, after which one of the two drivers felt disadvantaged.
After fending off the Italian’s attack in turn one, Russell had strong words over the radio. Antonelli then took consequences from the incident by giving his teammate a bit more space through turn eight before the Brit tried to get revenge.
First tensions visible in the Mercedes duel
After the finish behind sprint winner Russell and McLaren driver Lando Norris, Antonelli sought out Russell. After an initially rather cool and formal handshake, Russell quickly moved towards second-placed Norris and left Antonelli the attention of the spectators after his first podium in Formula 1.
Is Russell already trying to assert himself after three consecutive defeats? One thing is certain: every internal team fight has its Canada moment.
The track was already the scene of the first confrontation between then world champion Nico Rosberg and his later teammate Lewis Hamilton. Russell had a comparatively quiet start to the 2026 season so far but had to realize early on that Antonelli is not only fast on paper but can also defend aggressively.
Russell emphasizes calmly and composedly
Nevertheless, Russell downplays the significance of the incident: “I think that was more important for you and for public perception than for me. For me, there was never any doubt. I know you guys haven’t really noticed the whole Formula 1 year. You just never noticed because I never fought at the front. Now I’m fighting for big points.”
Regarding the investigation of the incident, Russell says: “I didn’t think it was necessary to say anything, and it wasn’t investigated. So I assume the race control and stewards saw it similarly. But I still have to check it again. Race control has punished us quite harshly in the past and I don’t want to make a mistake.”

Antonelli assesses the incident differently than Russell
Antonelli described the situation somewhat differently. After an internal Mercedes discussion, he viewed the matter from another perspective.
“I probably understood the significance of this meeting a bit differently,” he says. “The emotions were very high at the moment and obviously I was very annoyed. But I still have to ask again what exactly was discussed, and then we will clarify it.”

Whether Russell or Antonelli was right ultimately lies at the discretion of the stewards. However, it is clear that the incident could represent an important learning experience for the young Antonelli. Especially his somewhat optimistic maneuver in turn eight and his ongoing radio messages led to even Toto Wolff intervening several times.
“It is important to remember that Antonelli is only 19 years old and has not yet completed his full development. This will probably not be the last time he fights wheel to wheel with Russell, provided Mercedes regains its former dominance in Canada.”
The next development step as team leader
Since the Italian is in a team with great pressure and is striving upwards, the next step in his development could be to assert himself in a leadership role. Antonelli’s youthful charm and playful nature could be just as decisive as the determination that has already led him to call Russell a “killer,” as Wolff recently revealed.
In Formula 1, close rivalries between teammates often develop a special dynamic. Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg went from teammates to bitter rivals at Mercedes. Rosberg later said: “What I learned from that time is that you have to be willing to do things you never would have done before.”
