– Difficult Sunday qualifying of the DTM at the Sachsenring on a wet track: After a rain shower this morning, it dried up, but it was still too wet for slicks. The pole position was secured by Winward-Mercedes driver Maro Engel with a 1:26.307, which is about ten seconds slower than the times on a dry track.

The 41-year-old thus reduced his deficit in the overall standings to three points behind DTM leader Thomas Preining, who finished sixth with a 1.030-second deficit. Second place went to Preining’s Manthey-Porsche teammate Ricardo Feller, who had a substantial 0.448-second deficit. In third place was Engel’s very strong Winward-Mercedes teammate Jules Gounon (+0.755), already on Saturday.
Fourth was Ben Dörr (+0.874) in the Dörr-McLaren, in fifth place was Land-Porsche youngster Bastian Buus (+0.938). For Saturday’s winner Marco Wittmann, it was a hard setback: The Schubert-BMW driver, who is third in the championship with a 14-point deficit, only managed 19th place with a 2.005-second deficit. Things went better for teammate Kelvin van der Linde with seventh place and a 1.224-second deficit.

It went even worse for Aston-Martin driver Nicki Thiim. The Comtoyou driver, who is fourth in the championship, finished 20th with a 2.038-second deficit.
Where did the other title contenders position themselves? Landgraf-Mercedes driver Lucas Auer, who is fifth in the overall standings, finished ninth, Emil-Frey-Ferrari driver Matteo Cairoli – sixth in the overall standings – positioned himself 17th with a 1.865-second deficit.
