(Motorsport-Total.com/Motor1) – Ford is stepping up at the Nordschleife. The new Mustang GTD Competition completed the Green Hell in 6:40.835 minutes, securing a prominent place in the record books just in time for the 62nd anniversary of the model series.

Less than a year after first breaking the seven-minute mark with the Mustang GTD, Ford is now pushing the Competition version. Driven by factory driver Dirk Müller, the time marks the fastest lap of a Mustang on the Nordschleife so far and places the GTD Competition sixth in the pre-series and prototype ranking.

Ford emphasizes the technology transfer from motorsport. The 5.2-liter V8 with supercharger receives hardware updates and aggressive tuning. The brand aims for a power output beyond the already announced 826 hp of the regular GTD. Added to this are new high-performance tires, a revised damper system, and magnesium wheels that further reduce weight.

Ford also focuses on aerodynamics. Based on the well-known DRS system, the Mustang GTD Competition receives modified rear wings, additional front canards, and closed carbon aero discs on the rear wheels. The goal remains more downforce without noticeable losses in efficiency and drag. Every km/h more speed in the fast sections counts on the Nordschleife.

The new best time beats the previous Mustang GTD record in the production class by more than eleven seconds. Ford also points to the Ford GT Mk IV, which set a top time for a US brand on the Ring just two weeks earlier. According to the company, the factory now holds the two fastest Nordschleife laps by an American manufacturer.

Behind the numbers is, according to Ford, a small core team that invested a lot of free time in the project. Besides professional driver Dirk Müller, Ford race engineer Steve Thompson was also behind the wheel. He completed the lap in the GTD Competition in 6:49.337 minutes, well below previous Mustang bests. This development is intended to flow directly into the road car for the series.

Alongside the technical focus, the record mania among manufacturers is growing at the Nordschleife. Whether hypercar, sedan, or SUV, almost every brand is now chasing a best time in some class. However, the entries differ greatly in tires, aero packages, and vehicle status. Comparability is rare, but attention in the headlines almost always follows.

Ford is now playing this game offensively but limits the Mustang GTD Competition to North America. The model appears as a strictly limited special edition with a serial number. No homologation is planned for the German market. Those who want to experience the new record lap will have to rely on onboard videos and track day dreams for now.
