Formula E Monaco 2026: Sensational Victory for World Champion Rowland

– Oliver Rowland (Nissan) secured his first win of the season at the second E-Prix of Monaco 2026. Starting from eighth position, the reigning world champion managed to take the lead through tactical skill. Felipe Drugovich (Andretti) and Antonio Felix da Costa (Jaguar) finished second and third on the podium.

Mitch Evans (Jaguar) achieved fourth place, while Edoardo Mortara (Mahindra) was classified fifth. Without his ten-second time penalty, the Swiss driver would have been on the podium. Sixth place went to Jake Dennis (Andretti).

Nico Müller (Porsche) moved up to seventh position after a disappointing qualifying, followed by Joel Eriksson (Envision), Saturday winner Nyck de Vries (Mahindra), and Lucas di Grassi (Lola).

Compared to the previous day, the race was one lap shorter. Additionally, the possibility to use the so-called Pit-Boost, which was available on Saturday, was not present. Instead, the drivers had two “Attack Mode” phases available, whereas on Saturday only one could be used.

Chaos on the street circuit

In the first lap, da Costa was spun around by Mortara in the harbor chicane. Polesitter Dan Ticktum (Cupra) lost his lead shortly afterwards to the Mahindra driver, who was instructed via radio to save more energy. Accordingly, the top 10 were very close together in the first laps.

In lap five, Mortara received a ten-second time penalty. Meanwhile, Müller was able to fight his way from the midfield to first position thanks to activated Attack Mode. Norman Nato (Nissan) was forced shortly afterwards to retire his car in the pits.

The reason was a collision with Taylor Barnard (DS-Penske) in the last corner. Barnard received a ten-second time penalty for this incident.

Lap by lap, the first “Attack Mode” phases led to fierce battles especially in the midfield. Furthermore, Evans was able to pass Mortara towards the casino. The championship leader also managed to get past Porsche driver Müller and take the lead.

In lap 14, Drugovich pulled off a small masterpiece when the 2022 Formula 2 champion overtook Mortara and Müller with a maneuver after the first corner. However, his place on the podium was short-lived, as Mortara and Ticktum were able to pass the Brazilian a few laps later.

Maximilian Günther (DS-Penske) received a five-second penalty meanwhile. The reason was a collision with Sebastien Buemi (Envision) in the Fairmont hairpin. Müller dropped back lap by lap into the midfield until the Porsche driver made a mistake in lap 17 at the Rascasse. Up front, the lead changed hands between Mortara, Ticktum, and Evans.

At the Rascasse, Josep Maria Martí (Cupra) and Nick Cassidy (Citroen) caused the first full-course yellow phase of the race with another collision. As a result of the yellow phase, da Costa was in the lead, followed by Mortara, Drugovich, and Rowland.

In lap 23, Mortara and the suddenly competitive Rowland passed the Jaguar driver, allowing the 2024/25 world champion to secure the lead. He had saved enough energy during the race to launch a successful final sprint.

Polesitter Ticktum had to accept a five-second time penalty. The Cupra driver was speeding during the full-course yellow phase and reacted very angrily on the radio.

Shortly before the end, Barnard crashed his DS-Penske into the barrier, causing the second full-course yellow phase. However, this incident no longer changed the final result.

The point for the fastest race lap in the top 10 also went to Rowland. Thus, the world champion is currently second in the standings. Nevertheless, Evans remains the leader in the championship with 128 points.
