– “That was a strong weekend,” cheered Schubert-BMW driver Marco Wittmann after this year’s DTM season opener at the Red Bull Ring in Austria. The 36-year-old from Fürth raced to second place on the podium in the second race on Sunday, securing the 51st podium of his DTM career.

The experienced BMW driver started from ninth position on Sunday and gained a total of seven places during the race. “It’s a good feeling to start the season so successfully, but ultimately it will be about maintaining this consistency throughout the entire season,” the Fürth native knows after his 51st podium in the DTM.
For Wittmann, this even closes a circle, as his first podium in the DTM also came in Styria: Already in the third race of his DTM career, which he began in the 2013 season with the BMW team MTEK, the now two-time champion finished second for the first time among the top 3 and thus on the podium.
Since then, Marco Wittmann has added numerous race wins and top-3 results. The long-time BMW factory driver has thus secured not only a place in the top 10 of the most successful DTM drivers by podiums but also matched a well-known DTM icon at this year’s season opener.

Because both Wittmann and DTM veteran Bruno Spengler now each have 51 podiums. The Canadian, who was crowned champion together with BMW in 2012, competed in a total of 195 races between 2005 and 2019 and celebrated 16 race wins.
But while Spengler has long since ended his successful DTM career, Wittmann could catch up with the next legend already this season: The Schubert-BMW driver is only eight podiums away from matching a three-time DTM champion, who currently stands at 59 podiums.
