This concludes the first quarter with a solid growth of 5,2 %. Particularly striking: while commercial registrations (share: 65,0 %) increased by 13,0 %, private interest shot up significantly more with a plus of 22,2 %.

The 10 best-selling models in March 2026

Regardless of segments and classes, the registration statistics of individual models show certain surprises. The Tesla Model Y was able to gain strongly and rose to place 2 of the top 10:

01. VW Golf – 8.819 new registrations
02. Tesla Model Y – 6.841
03. VW T-Roc – 5.855
04. VW Tiguan – 5.705
05. Opel Corsa – 4.815
06. BMW X1 – 4.620
07. Skoda Octavia – 4.418
08. Audi A6 – 3.996
09. Mercedes GLC – 3.962
10. Skoda Elroq – 3.872

The places after that are also interesting: at eleven the BMW X3 with 3.795 new registrations, at twelve the Hyundai Tucson (3.732).

Among German brands, development was inconsistent, but positive overall. Smart grew particularly strongly, with an increase of 189,6 percent, albeit with a still very low market share of 0,2 percent. Opel (+ 43,0 %), Audi (+ 25,0 %), and BMW (+ 16,5 %) also recorded significant double-digit gains.

Ford (+ 8,7 %) and Volkswagen (+ 3,2 %) also increased their registration numbers. Volkswagen remained the highest-volume brand on the German market with a share of 17,9 percent. Porsche, on the other hand, had to accept declines (- 12,1 %).

Import brands: strong dynamics with small volumes

Among import brands, smaller providers in particular ensured striking growth rates. Lynk & Co and Aston Martin achieved extraordinary increases with growth of over 3.000 percent, albeit with very low absolute unit numbers.

Among the higher-volume import brands, Skoda (+ 34,0 %) and Hyundai (+ 29,5 %) were able to grow in double digits. Seat, on the other hand, recorded a decrease of 4,9 percent. Skoda remained the strongest import brand with a market share of 8,4 percent.

The development of new and electrified brands is remarkable: BYD (+ 327,1 %), Leapmotor (+ 318,1 %), Tesla (+ 315,1 %), Xpeng (+ 211,9 %), and Alpine (+ 138,5 %) each grew in triple digits. In contrast, Maxus (- 92,3 %) and Nio (- 90,5 %) showed significant declines.

Electric cars drive the market

Electromobility remains a key growth driver. In March, 70.663 battery-electric vehicles (BEV) were newly registered. This corresponds to an increase of 66,2 percent and a market share of 24,0 percent. It remains to be seen whether the current fuel price crisis will lead to even higher sales.

Hybrid vehicles (including many mild hybrids) reached a share of 40,1 percent (+ 16,2 %) with 117.846 units. Among them were 29.996 plug-in hybrids, whose registrations increased by 13,0 percent.

Conventional drives, on the other hand, continued to lose importance. Gasoline engines accounted for 66.959 units (- 4,9 %) and a share of 22,8 percent. Diesel passenger cars fell slightly by 0,6 percent and reached a market share of 12,8 percent.

Alternative fuels continue to play a marginal role: 1.015 vehicles with liquid gas were newly registered (-18,9 %), while only one vehicle with a fuel cell was registered. No new registrations were reported for natural gas vehicles in March.

March 2026 marks a clear revival of the German passenger car market. The main growth drivers are commercial registrations and electrified drives. While established manufacturers are growing solidly, new providers – especially from the electric segment – continue to gain visibility, if also at a low level.
