– The serious Norisring accident between Kelvin van der Linde (Schubert-BMW) and Maximilian Paul (Grasser-Lamborghini) was one of the biggest shocks in recent years. But a look into the history books shows: It was by no means the most spectacular accident in the “new” DTM since 2000.

The rollover of Audi driver Alexandre Premat probably tops the list of wild DTM accidents: The Frenchman collided with a competitor during the 2010 race in Adria, Italy, then crashed into the guardrail and rolled over a total of four times. His Phoenix Audi was completely destroyed, Premat remained almost uninjured.
Lamborghini driver Paul, on the other hand, suffered a tibia and fibula fracture as well as a lumbar vertebra fracture in his accident in Nuremberg. An injury that Premat also knows at least to some extent: The Audi driver tore a lumbar vertebra when he was involved in a pile-up at the 2010 season opener in Hockenheim.

The most recent DTM driver to suffer a lumbar vertebra fracture, however, was David Schumacher. The son of former Formula 1 driver Ralf Schumacher was involved in an accident with Thomas Preining (Porsche) at the 2022 DTM finale, after which Schumacher crashed heavily into the concrete wall and sustained the unpleasant back injury.

Significantly more luck, for example, had the three-time DTM champion Rene Rast, who rolled over with his Audi at the Lausitzring in 2018, as well as the current DTM champion Ayhancan Güven, who was heavily taken out by his brand colleague Christian Engelhart in a Porsche at the Nürburgring in 2022.
The legendary Norisring in Nuremberg has also been the scene of spectacular DTM accidents several times in the past 26 years – for example, with a brake failure on Martin Tomczyk’s Audi in 2002 or the heavy accident between Gary Paffett (Mercedes) and Mike Rockenfeller (Audi) in the 2017 season.
