(Motorsport-Total.com/Motor1) – Rumors have been circulating for some time, and now it is official: Opel is bringing a new electric car from partner Leapmotor to Europe under its own brand. It is an electric compact SUV. It will be built in Zaragoza, Spain, where the Corsa is also produced in parallel.

The “completely new,” fully electric SUV is intended to expand Opel’s range in the compact segment, writes the Rüsselsheim brand. The Blitz brand already offers electric versions of the Frontera, Mokka, Astra, and Grandland there. The project serves as a blueprint for expanded cooperation between Stellantis and Leapmotor. At the same time, it should enable the German brand to “make a significant strategic step in electrification and scaling in the shortest possible time.” Production is scheduled to start as early as 2028.
The new electric SUV is to be “designed and created in Rüsselsheim,” but developed jointly with Leapmotor in Germany and China. The partnership with Leapmotor is also intended to enable a development time of less than two years, said Opel CEO Florian Huettl.
The new model is to use central components of the latest electric platform as well as battery technology from Leapmotor. Opel wants to contribute the design, operating philosophy, chassis expertise, as well as lighting and seating technology.
