Rins fights to stay in MotoGP: “I am waiting for an answer”

– The future of Alex Rins in MotoGP remains uncertain. The Yamaha rider confirmed on the sidelines of the Mugello Grand Prix that he is still waiting for feedback regarding a possible permanent seat for the 2027 season.

Despite the difficult sporting situation at Yamaha, the Spaniard remains calm but at the same time knows that his chances of staying in the premier class are limited.

Rins: “There is still a free spot”

“I don’t have a motorcycle that allows me to show my full potential. What will happen next year? I don’t know. I would like to stay in MotoGP, but time passes quickly,” says Rins, who has been racing in the premier class since the 2017 season, first for Suzuki, then LCR-Honda, and finally Yamaha.

“I am calm because I know my abilities. But if it doesn’t work out, life goes on. There is still a free spot in MotoGP. I am waiting for an answer.”

It has long been clear that the Spaniard will leave Yamaha after the season. From 2027, Jorge Martin and Ai Ogura will take the places of Rins and Fabio Quartararo. While Quartararo is said to have already settled his future with Honda months ago, Rins is still without a fixed destination for 2027.

His situation is further complicated by the fact that the rider market has sorted itself out early and only a few spots remain available. At the same time, Rins was unable to match the performances that had previously distinguished him at Suzuki and Honda during his time at Yamaha. After ten years in MotoGP, the rider from Barcelona could therefore be facing his last 15 Grands Prix in the world championship.

Best race weekend despite crash

Ironically, Rins showed one of his strongest weekends of the year in Mugello. Given the obvious deficits of the current Yamaha and the fact that the manufacturer from Iwata is already heavily focused on developing the new prototype for 2027, his performance was particularly remarkable.

Rins was the only one of the four Yamaha riders who qualified directly for the second qualifying session. In the sprint, he finished twelfth, exactly from the position he had qualified. In the Grand Prix itself, he was in 15th place before crashing out in the eleventh lap.

While these results are not arguments that particularly recommend a rider, they reflect the current reality at Yamaha. Besides Rins, this also affects Jack Miller, whose MotoGP future is also uncertain.

Only a few options left for 2027

The remaining options for Rins currently seem to be limited to the Trackhouse and Tech3 teams. At Trackhouse, much indicates that Enea Bastianini will receive a machine there. The only open question is who will ride the team’s second Aprilia. Raul Fernandez’s recent performances, especially his sprint win in Mugello, could play an important role.

There are also two seats still to be filled at Tech3-KTM. Candidates include Maverick Vinales, Brad Binder, Luca Marini, and Senna Agius from Moto2.

Difficult situation within Yamaha

The fact that both Rins and Quartararo will no longer be part of Yamaha’s project for 2027 also creates a special constellation internally. The manufacturer is already working intensively on the future and the new prototype and no longer shares all development information with the current rider pairing.

While Quartararo now focuses on simply finishing races uninjured, Rins cannot afford to hold back. He still needs convincing performances to keep his chances of staying in MotoGP alive.

According to his statements, the situation also affects the working environment. Rins reveals: “The good thing is that I have a very good relationship with my workgroup. However, within the team, it is no longer like it used to be, I don’t want to fool you. Now I have seen how some people really tick.”

“There are still many races to come, but I try to remain as professional and respectful as possible – just as I was taught at home,” explains the Spaniard.
