Seat before discontinuation: Manufacturer comments on model update and end of the brand

(Motorsport-Total.com/Motor1) – The Spanish automobile manufacturer Seat S.A. has responded to speculation about the discontinuation of the traditional brand and published details about its future strategy. While the company is still investing in the electrification of existing model ranges in the short term, it no longer rules out a gradual phase-out of the brand in the coming decade. This is the management’s response to the recent unrest in the industry.

The trigger was a report from “WirtschaftsWoche.” According to it, the Volkswagen Group is considering discontinuing Seat by the end of 2029 at the latest as part of its savings program. The newspaper referred to an internal dossier. Later, among others, Reuters picked up the plans. The official reaction was initially that no final strategic decision had yet been made.

Seat itself speaks of a possible phase-out

The now published statement from Seat S.A. provides more details. It will continue at least until the end of the current product cycle. Ibiza and Arona are to receive mild hybrid drives in 2027. A full hybrid is planned for the Leon in 2028, with further updates to the model range to follow in 2029.

It gets more interesting for the time after that. The future orientation of the brand is still under review. Stricter regulations, the costs of electrification, and the necessary investments in another model generation would increasingly limit the economic scope.

For the period after 2030, Seat S.A. names various scenarios. This explicitly includes a “gradual phase-out,” i.e., a gradual discontinuation of the Seat brand. A final decision has not yet been made. The reports from yesterday are therefore not denied in their crucial point.

It is interesting that CEO Markus Haupt explicitly confirmed the continuation of the brand just a few weeks ago. Motor1 had reported on this.

Seat continues to sell surprisingly many cars

This is remarkable also with regard to sales figures. Despite a modest model offensive for years, Seat has by no means disappeared into insignificance. In 2023, the brand sold 288,437 cars worldwide. In 2024, sales even increased by 7.5 percent to 310,046 vehicles.

In 2024 alone, the Ibiza reached 106,700 units, an increase of a whopping 37.1 percent. The Arona achieved another 90,300 units. And this with models whose current generations have been on the market since 2017.

However, Seat suffered a significant setback in 2025. Sales fell by 17 percent to 257,432 vehicles. At the same time, Cupra increased by 32.5 percent to 328,819 cars. The younger sister brand has now clearly overtaken Seat.

The concrete roadmap ends in 2029

Against this background, the further product planning is striking. The measures now named for Seat concern exclusively existing models. The company does not announce a completely new model generation or even a battery-electric car with the Seat logo.

It looks completely different with Cupra. By 2030, the brand aims to reach a three percent market share in Europe. Expansion into the Middle East is planned from 2027, and in the long term, entry into the US market remains a topic. Seat S.A. explicitly describes Cupra as a central driver for growth and profitability.

A Spanish brand with almost 80 years of history

Seat was founded in 1950 as “Sociedad Española de Automóviles de Turismo” and developed into the Spanish mass market brand with models like the 600. Volkswagen took a majority stake in 1986 and later fully acquired Seat. Among the best-known models of past decades are Ibiza and Leon. In 2030, the brand would celebrate its 80th anniversary. Ironically, this year could now become a decisive milestone for its future.

Seat S.A. is not the Seat brand

Therefore, the distinction between the car brand and the company is crucial. Even if vehicles with the Seat logo are no longer sold at some point, this does not mean the end of Seat S.A. or the main plant in Martorell, Spain.

The company plays an important role within the Volkswagen Group for small electric cars. Models of the new Electric Urban Car Family based on the MEB21 architecture are produced in Martorell. Seat S.A. is also working on another platform for the plant and even expects higher employment needs in the coming years.
