The first Jaguar of the new era finally has a name: Type 01

(Motorsport-Total.com/Motor1) – In December 2024, Jaguar more or less pressed the reset button with the presentation of the striking two-door Type 00. The distinctive radical coupe signaled the British brand’s step into the super-luxury segment – with significantly higher prices and lower production numbers, clearly targeting Bentley rather than BMW. Although the concept is now about a year and a half old, we still have to wait a bit for the production model.

In the meantime, Jaguar reveals the name of the final version: Type 01. A straightforward designation with a clear message: zero emissions and the first model after the repositioning upwards. For Managing Director Rawdon Glover, the two digits also have an additional meaning: zero stands for a “complete brand reset,” and one for “unique.”

Regardless of the name, the Jaguar Type 01 is developing into one of the most interesting vehicles of our time. A key change from the concept to the series is the switch to a more practical four-door body style for the extravagant GT, which is expected to be about 5.2 meters long. Thanks to the massive 3.2-meter wheelbase, it is likely to offer a very spacious cabin – and at the same time room for a large battery pack with a net capacity of about 120 kWh.

Jaguar Type 01: Technical Data

An expected range of 644 kilometers per charge in the EPA test cycle and up to 692 kilometers according to WLTP is anticipated. The large battery is supposed to power a tri-motor setup delivering a system output of more than 735 kW (1,000 hp) as well as virtually instant torque of over 1,300 Nm.

Jaguar is confident that these figures will translate into an “exciting driving experience with great performance reserves as well as sophistication and composure.” Even the base version is expected to come standard with 23-inch wheels; for certain countries with poorer roads, a smaller 21-inch set is planned. As expected for a high-end vehicle, the Type 01 will feature an elaborate air suspension with active two-valve dampers designed to provide particularly comfortable rolling.

While some reports speculated about a range extender variant, Jaguar has officially ruled out the installation of an internal combustion engine. In the future, the company belonging to the Tata Motors group intends to sell exclusively pure electric vehicles. These are expected to be priced significantly higher than what has been customary so far from the brand with the leaping cat – entry prices well above 100,000 euros.

Starting in 2027

The world premiere is announced for later this year, with the first deliveries expected to begin in the first half of 2027.

In automotive history, it is rare for a manufacturer to make such a radical change of course. It is not only about switching completely to electric drive but also about raising prices so much that a nearly completely different clientele is targeted. Jaguar has even admitted that it does not expect more than 15 percent return customers – thereby effectively accepting the loss of the majority of its previous clientele.

Who is supposed to buy the Type 00 and the subsequent models is described by Rawdon Glover as buyers from the top segment who prioritize design and interior quality. For this target group, according to the Managing Director, the drive “ranks about 13th on the list.”

Added to this is the design, which has divided opinions since the eccentric concept debuted at the end of 2024. The later production version seems hardly to tame the appearance – and the omission of a rear window will likely fuel the discussions even more.
