VW ID.3 Neo (2026): Back to old virtues with the facelift?

(Motorsport-Total.com/Motor1) – Harmless design, software errors, criticism of operation and quality: The first vehicle designed purely as an electric car from Wolfsburg had a difficult start. Software updates required a workshop appointment, later adjustments were made over-the-air. Despite the software running smoothly later on, the VW ID.3 has not yet shaken off its backpack of criticism points.

And yet, the compact is one of the most popular electric cars in Europe. 78,000 units were sold in 2025 alone. In Germany, the ID.3 almost monthly competes for the top 3 in the electric car registration statistics. With the facelift, VW now wants to consistently eliminate remaining legacy issues.

Back to the “True Volkswagen,” as they like to invoke in Wolfsburg. To make this clear to potential interested parties, the new evolutionary stage is also distinguished in the name: the addition “Neo” now appears behind the ID.3 abbreviation.

Interior

The biggest changes, however, await in the interior. VW has apparently taken the criticism to heart and made large-scale improvements. Promises are promises – this was already announced in 2022, repeatedly reiterated, and ultimately shown in the prototypes of the ID. Cross and ID. Polo. Buttons and controls for central functions are back. Goodbye touch elements and controls … we will not miss you.

The ID.3 Neo brings four window control buttons, a “real” climate control, and physical buttons on the steering wheel back into the cockpit. All of this comes with solid pressure and good feedback. In addition, there are new, soft materials with a fabric look in the visible area and a consistently horizontal layout of lines and surfaces. The rather spartan center console from the pre-facelift is gone.

Wide and stable, the new padded center armrest with adjustable cup holders and inductive charging tray stretches between the front seats. Newly designed upholstery fabrics are also used on the doors and seats in the ID.3 Neo. This already creates a more premium feel during the seat test than the predecessor. The loading volume remains the same at 385 to 1,267 liters.

The instrument cluster is now larger and angular. 10.25 inches instead of the previous 5.3 inches ensure structured information flow. Various graphical interfaces can be applied here – including the “retro display” already known from the ID. Polo, which resembles the instrument view of a late Golf I.

The 12.9-inch infotainment system “Innovision” was also newly developed and designed. It replaces the previously known “Discover” system and comes in three versions. It follows the design and graphics of the ID.7, the upcoming ID. Polo, and ID. Cross. Additional functions and services can be digitally, flexibly, and vehicle-specifically unlocked via the in-car shop.

VW also returns to familiar equipment lines: Pure, Pro, and Pro S are history with the ID.3 Neo. Trend, Life, and Style now also enter the electric palette. According to Wolfsburg, all three versions should offer “very good standard equipment.” For example, the Trend comes with automatic climate control. Systems that are on board can be unlocked later for a fee. Such as steering wheel heating or numerous assistance systems. This preprograms further public discussions about driving cost factors, even if they suggest flexibility.

Drive and Battery

Also because the VW ID.3 Neo continues to rely on rear-wheel drive, it probably will not be suitable to replace the Golf. The compact’s drive system is a new development. The APP350 (Axial Parallel Position – an axially parallel arrangement of the permanently excited synchronous machine) replaces the previous APP310. The package is supposed to be even more compact and effective, especially in combination with the partly higher power and larger batteries.

Three power levels are available: 125 kW (170 hp), 140 kW (190 hp), and 170 kW (231 hp). The 125 kW version is coupled to the 50 kWh battery (net) and the Trend equipment. The ID.3 Neo Life and ID.3 Neo Style can optionally be configured with a 58 kWh battery (net) and 140 kW power as well as a 79 kWh battery (net) and 170 kW power.

The smaller batteries charge somewhat slower at a maximum of 105 kW at DC fast charging stations than the last APP310 versions with up to 120 kW. However, the charging curve is said to remain at a “constantly high level.” The 79 kWh version reaches up to 183 kW. A successor to the GTX as a new top model has also been announced. It will come to market later in the year with its own drive (APP550). Adaptable new e-sounds are also mentioned.

Depending on the battery version, VW speaks of charging times (10 to 80 percent) between 26 and 29 minutes. Due to higher efficiency compared to the predecessor, the system’s energy consumption should also decrease. Up to 417 kilometers are possible with the 50 kWh battery and 125 kW. The combination of 58 kWh battery and 140 kW drive achieves 494 kilometers, and the large 79 kWh battery should reach a maximum of 630 kilometers. One Pedal Driving provides additional driving comfort, and a Vehicle-to-Load function offers flexibility.

In summary

Technically, the VW ID.3 Neo is more of a 2nd generation than a facelift. Faux pas have been addressed and adjusted. That is commendable! However, features that can be unlocked afterwards will fuel further criticism. Overall, the “True Volkswagen” package can only be assessed once the prices are announced.

And that should be soon. The old one is no longer configurable, the pre-sale of the new compact is to start in April. Market launch will then follow in July 2026. Recently, the ID.3 was available with a discount from 33,330 euros, the ID.3 GTX cost at least 47,225 euros.
