When was the last time Formula 1 teams were both eliminated in Q1?

– Can you actually remember the last time Mercedes was eliminated with both cars in Q1? No? Neither can I. However, this is probably because the Silver Arrows have not experienced this mishap since they returned to Formula 1 as a works team in 2010.

Back in 2008 at Fuji, of all places at the home race of “archrival” Toyota, the predecessor team Honda had to retire both cars prematurely.

But don’t worry: It won’t be that boring for every team when we explore in our new photo series the question of when the current Formula 1 teams last both failed to get through Q1.

Of course, there are clear cases like Cadillac, where, I believe, no one has to guess much about when the newcomer last failed to reach Q2.

But even the top teams like Ferrari, Red Bull, or McLaren have been caught out once in recent years. And for one of these three teams, the last time was not that long ago.

Photo series: The last double Q1 exit of every current Formula 1 team

For those who still remember: It was only last year in Brazil that Red Bull failed at the first hurdle. Yuki Tsunoda was already a regular member of the Q1 elimination club at that time, and Max Verstappen was also caught out: He complained about lack of grip and was eliminated in 16th place.

As is well known, he still managed to get onto the podium the next day starting from the pit lane.

By the way: Red Bull’s last double Q1 exit before that was in the 2006 season – and thus longer ago than any other team in Formula 1. Back then, the drivers were David Coulthard and Robert Doornbos …
