Debacle in Markham: IndyCar boss frustrated with organizer

– The organizational disaster at the start of the IndyCar weekend in Markham, Canada, has led to sharp words. After the massive delays in track construction, which led to the cancellation of all practice sessions on Friday, IndyCar President Douglas Boles has spoken out with an unusually clear public statement.

“IndyCar is extremely disappointed that our organizer was unable to complete the track construction on time despite significant support from our own team on site,” he says.

“Ontario has always been a fantastic market for our sport, and the crowd that came today is a shining example of that. New events can always bring logistical challenges. We share the frustration of our loyal fans and sincerely apologize.”

He is optimistic about the rest of the weekend: Once the safety measures and technical installations are completed and the engines roar, the new street circuit in the east of the city will deliver what it promises: “Once we hit the track, we believe the course will be spectacular.”

He also explicitly thanks the local authorities of the city of Markham for their cooperation in building the 3.52-kilometer track, which with its 12 corners, fast sections, and a double-sided pit lane presents a major technical challenge and will offer a great show on Sunday.

To compensate for Friday’s cancellation and to give the drivers at least a minimum amount of practice time, the IndyCar officials and the promoter have feverishly developed an emergency schedule for Saturday. (All info including the new schedule for the IndyCar race in Markham)

The revised schedule provides that the drivers should still complete two practice sessions before qualifying. Despite the enormous time pressure in the late afternoon and early evening, the racing series is sticking to the traditional knockout format for qualifying, in which the starting grid is determined.

The pressure on the organizer Green Savoree Racing Promotions remains immense. After the missing safety fences, unfinished bridges, and missing cable trays for timing on Friday, the organization is now under strict observation by the IndyCar safety personnel.

Only when the series releases the race track as absolutely safe and competition-ready will Mick Schumacher and his 24 fellow drivers finally be allowed to take the new territory in Markham under their wheels on Saturday.
