The background is clear: After being replaced by Lewis Hamilton, Sainz had to reorient himself and consciously decided on a long-term project at Williams. Short-term success was never the goal – but the difficult start to the season makes the situation more complicated than expected.
Hinchcliffe: “A defining moment”
For James Hinchcliffe, the situation is clear. “This is in many ways a career-defining moment,” explains the former IndyCar driver.
In his opinion, Sainz faces a clear decision. “He has two options: either he sinks into self-pity – or he rolls up his sleeves and proves that it was the right decision,” says Hinchcliffe.
Precisely because the move to Williams is not a short-term success project, the right attitude is what matters now. The Spaniard must show that he is ready to move the team forward in the long term.
Difficult start with structural problems
The starting position is anything but easy. Williams is currently struggling with an overweight car and generally poor handling.

At least: Sainz himself scored the only points so far with a ninth-place finish at the 2026 Chinese Grand Prix. While solutions are being worked on internally, the necessary performance to compete regularly in the midfield is currently still lacking.
Long-term project instead of quick success
However, it was no surprise that the situation would be difficult. According to Hinchcliffe, it was clear from the start that Williams is not a team that can fight for victories immediately.
“No one expected him to be fighting for the world championship in 2026,” he explains. Rather, it is about creating a foundation for the future and raising the team’s potential step by step.
This is exactly where the challenge lies for Sainz: he must not only perform but also act as a builder and actively drive development forward.
