Audi A3 (1996-2003): The more upscale four-door Golf turns 30

Back then, Germany became European football champion for the last time, rapper Tupac Shakur died, and the cult group Take That disbanded. That autumn, Audi caused a stir at the Paris Motor Show. In the spotlight of the fair was a new vehicle for the compact class, the Audi A3.

Does the first Audi A3 still belong 30 years later to those models that are still widely seen on our roads? These are types that every road user knows and that are already well over twenty years old, although sometimes a little less. Will such everyday cars ever become true classics? This question sparks heated discussions among enthusiasts.

With an overall length of exactly 4.15 meters, the internally designated 8L series original A3 is about as long as an Audi 80 from 1972 or the last Audi A1. This shows how the familiar standards for the compact segment have shifted over the decades. The technical basis is the PQ34 group platform from the Volkswagen Group, on which, among others, the fourth-generation VW Golf and the first Skoda Octavia are also based.

The Wolfsburg relative, however, debuted only a full year after the Ingolstadt premium brother, which is also the reason why a five-door version of the A3 only came onto the market in spring 1999. The driving forces behind this project were then Volkswagen Group CEO Ferdinand Piëch and his technical director Martin Winterkorn.

Trend towards smaller format

Both managers recognized the signs of the times, as in the nineties many customers were moving towards upscale compact cars, whether as a social advancement or as a downsizing of their own fleet. The competition from Munich already sent the first BMW 3 Series Compact into the race in 1994, while at the same time the Mercedes A-Class appeared on the horizon, which finally premiered in 1997.

The Audi A3 fits well into this changing market environment, especially since the first independent Audi A4 gained dimensions compared to the old Audi 80. In the initial phase, the A3 was, as mentioned, only available as a three-door hatchback at dealers, divided into three different equipment lines and equipped with four different petrol and diesel engines.

To clearly distinguish it from the cheaper Golf, Audi refrained from a base engine with only 75 hp. Instead, the engine range at Ingolstadt started with 101 hp from a displacement of 1.6 liters. Above that were petrol engines with 125 hp as well as versions with 150 and 180 hp, which had turbocharging. For diesel enthusiasts, engines were available in a power range between 90 and 130 hp, while for transmissions the choice was between a four-speed automatic and the five-speed Tiptronic.

Additional doors after almost three years

From March 1999, the five-door version complemented the range. In the same year, Audi introduced quattro all-wheel drive in the model with the 1.8-liter turbo engine and 150 hp, establishing a new element in the premium compact segment. The manufacturer also set a milestone in spring 1999 with the introduction of the first generation of the sporty Audi S3. Its inline four-cylinder engine produced 210 hp from 1.8 liters displacement thanks to a turbocharger and five-valve technology.

In autumn 2000, the model series benefited from a facelift, which was visually moderate. The technicians modified, among other things, the headlights, the interior, and the taillights, making the car visually closer to the Audi A4 of the B6 generation, which appeared at the same time. Double headlights behind clear glass made the A3 look more upscale, and from this point on, xenon lights were available for the first time as an option. The responsible parties also aimed for a stronger visual differentiation from the VW Golf IV, which operated at a comparable quality level.

Extension in Brazil

In 2003, production of the first generation of the Audi A3 ended in Europe, while the lines in Brazil continued until 2006. Despite competition from its own parent company and other premium brands, the 8L series proved to be a success for the company, as around 913,000 units built underline the market position.

Today, this early A3 can be bought cheaply on the used car market, although it is not always completely free of rust in the typical places. The interior also shows the effects of time, as soft coatings and upholstery suffer from decades of use, so the ambiance no longer feels as good as on the first day.

Formally, however, the body of the 8L series still appears almost completely timeless today. As the A2, the first modern A6, or the already mentioned A4 of the B6 generation show, Audi’s design team had a lucky hand for timeless shapes in that era.
