Ferrari Purosangue: Camouflaged prototype raises hopes for technical update

(Motorsport-Total.com/Motor1) – Amid all the controversy surrounding the Luce, it is easy to forget that the Purosangue also raised some eyebrows at its debut in September 2022. Yes, Ferrari’s SUV is already approaching its fourth birthday, so it is not surprising that the Italians are working on a new version.

Judging by the extensive camouflage, further changes are likely to follow the handling package introduced a few months ago.

The fully covered prototype was spotted by YouTuber Varryx leaving the Ferrari factory in Maranello. The cladding emphasizes the numerous air intakes. It is hard to tell what changes have been made, but Ferrari probably has a good reason for the elaborate use of camouflage film. The design is unlikely to change drastically; the most important innovations will probably be under the hood.

From the start, Ferrari went all out with the Purosangue and launched the model with a V12 naturally aspirated engine. It could make sense for several reasons to follow up with a smaller powertrain. Whether it will be a V8 or even a V6 is open. A plug-in hybrid drive is also not out of the question. We see it in the current portfolio of the Italians: The hypercar F80 relies on an electrified V6, while on the other hand, the 12Cilindri fascinates with a naturally aspirated V12. In other words: currently, many things seem possible at Ferrari.

Plug-in hybrid with smaller engine?

Nevertheless, Ferrari must also comply with increasingly strict emission regulations. Therefore, downsizing combined with electrification makes quite a bit of sense. A plug-in hybrid with a battery that allows a decent electric range in the city might fit the Purosangue better than any other model with the prancing horse.

If the experiences from the development of the polarizing Luce are incorporated, this should result in an efficient powertrain. Not that efficiency is the highest priority for Ferrari customers, but it would certainly be welcome for a long-distance capable SUV.

CEO Benedetto Vigna recently said that two new models will be introduced before the end of 2026 but did not provide details. If the new Purosangue version is not among them, there are other candidates. Likely candidates include the long-awaited 296 Challenge Stradale, as well as the recently spotted F80 Aperta. Erlkönig hunters have also caught a sharper 12Cilindri, fueling rumors about a possible return of the GTO badge.

Whatever Ferrari plans for the rest of the year: business is going very well in Maranello. The order books are filled until 2027, and yes, even the Luce is apparently an early success despite the criticism online.

Motor1 says: As far as nothing has changed, Ferrari artificially limits Purosangue production to 20 percent of the company’s total annual production. Without this restriction, Ferrari would probably have built significantly more units. Even if some might argue that “Ferrari” and “SUV” do not belong in the same sentence, the all-rounder is undoubtedly a gain for the business. And that is what counts in the end.

We assume that Ferrari will partially electrify the Purosangue, slightly revise the design, and possibly also make some adjustments to the interior.
