Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff believes that it was mainly the updates of the competitors that caused the Silver Arrows not to win for the first time in 2026 today.

“We knew that with our upgrades coming in Montreal, we would have a slightly different rhythm than the others,” Wolff told Sky.

Nevertheless, he admits that Mercedes had “hoped” to be a bit closer to the others.

Regarding Antonelli’s start, he also says it was not the Italian’s fault. “It was a glitch on our side,” he emphasizes.

The Italian cannot really explain his poor start. He explains on F1 TV that this time he actually did everything right during the procedure. Nevertheless, he lost several positions again.

The poor start then naturally influenced the rest of the race, he says. In the end, there was also the penalty for repeatedly exceeding track limits. This caused him to drop from P4 to P6.

Speaking of qualifying: Sprint winner Lando Norris does not want to change much for it. “So far it has worked. We will change a few things. There are a few points I want to do differently than yesterday, and we will adjust those,” he announces.

However, there will “probably not be too many” changes, because so far it has been “a good day.” “A good start to the weekend, but now I have to do it all again,” says the world champion.

“The upgrades worked well,” the Monegasque explains after P3, but emphasizes: “I am not satisfied with P3. We would have liked a better place, but McLaren also brought significant upgrades and made a big step forward.”

“But we are not too far behind,” he clarifies and adds: “If we bring everything together, we can start a bit further up.” Afterwards, the qualifying for the Grand Prix awaits us.

Hülkenberg drove onto the track, his Audi is running – but only briefly. Because even before he reaches the starting grid, smoke is pouring heavily from his rear. Flames also come out of the exhaust. The German stops his Audi R26 on the track and cannot participate in the sprint!

These are not the images fans like to see: Work is being done under Nico Hülkenberg’s car and even liquid is being wiped off. Is there a problem? If Hülkenberg cannot start, it would be the third (!) time this season that we see only one Audi on the grid.

When the sprint starts shortly, only 21 cars will be on the grid, because rookie Arvid Lindblad will start from the pit lane. His Racing Bulls team worked on the car for too long and broke the curfew. Although there are four jokers per team and season for this, it does not protect Lindblad from a penalty.

Reason: It remains a violation of the parc fermé regulations. Lindblad had driven 16th in the sprint qualifying but had gained one position due to subsequent track limits of Alexander Albon.

One more small note about the sprint later: Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso are allowed to participate in the race, although they missed the 107 percent mark in qualifying and thus actually did not qualify.

The FIA issued both a special permit because they were fast enough in the previous practice. A standard procedure in such a case.

For the first time this year, no Mercedes starts from pole in the sprint later. Andrew Shovlin from the Silver Arrows explains: “At a sprint weekend, it is always important to get off to a full start immediately. Unfortunately, we did not succeed today.”

“The car was not yet at the level we aimed for in the first practice, and the drivers had difficulties from the start to drive consistent lap times. Our long-run pace was more encouraging but still not at the level we aim for.”

“Our difficulties continued in the sprint qualifying. Although Kimi performed better than George, it is clear that we still need to find time overnight – both in energy management and in general car setup.”

“It seems that our competitors brought a bit more performance to this race than we did,” says Shovlin. Let’s see if this impression is confirmed today.

Sad news reach us at the start of the day from Italy. As his family confirmed, former Formula 1 driver, CART champion, and multiple Paralympic winner Alessandro Zanardi passed away yesterday at the age of 59.
