– Formula 2 unveiled the new car for the 2027 to 2029 seasons this weekend in the Formula 1 paddock at Monza: The car represents a significant advancement over the current generation and moves visually and technically even closer to the premier class.

That is exactly the goal of the junior series. “Formula 2 is the ultimate testing ground for the next generation of Formula 1 drivers, where the very best young talents compete wheel to wheel,” says Formula 1 boss Stefano Domenicali.
“This new vehicle marks another important step forward: it combines innovation, safety, and more exciting racing without compromising the level playing field that allows drivers to prove their skills,” emphasizes the Italian.
To keep costs manageable for the junior teams, the new car is still based on the well-known 2026 Dallara chassis. However, the aerodynamics have been visibly changed: completely redesigned front and rear wings provide a look strongly inspired by the current Formula 1.

According to Formula 2 series chief Bruno Michel, the focus during the revision was primarily on the racing. The new aerodynamic characteristics will “improve the Formula 2 car’s ability to deliver close racing” because drivers will be able to follow their competitors more easily in the slipstream.
FIA President Mohammed bin Sulayem also sees the new concept as an important milestone: “The new car for 2027 raises the bar in terms of safety, delivers closer racing, improves accessibility, and underlines our commitment to sustainability. It is an important step in strengthening the FIA’s path in formula racing and developing the champions of tomorrow.”
The most important innovation: The long-awaited on-board starter
One of the important technical developments concerns operability on the track: From 2027, Formula 2 cars will be equipped with an on-board starter. For the integration of the system, Hewland has further developed the current six-speed gearbox.

For the drivers and the racing, this is a massive gain. “We have added an on-board starter that will simplify operations for the teams and allow drivers to restart their car on track after a spin or stall,” explains Bruno Michel.
The long wait for track marshals or yellow flags during the race, which were often necessary even after small driving errors, will thus be eliminated. “Our fans expect Formula 2 races to be highly entertaining and safe, and this new kit will deliver exactly that,” the series chief is convinced.
Formula 2 with consistency in engine, tires, and electronics
Under the hood, the series relies on proven technology. The 3.4-liter V6 turbo engine from Mecachrome continues to deliver 620 hp and is still powered by sustainable fuel from Aramco. Pirelli also remains the exclusive partner for the 18-inch tires.
The electronics and hydraulics package from Marelli remains unchanged, as do brakes and steering system, which is why the car still has to manage without power steering. Initial tests with the 2027 car already took place in June in Barcelona, followed by an intensive development program in the wind tunnel and on the track.

The first deliveries to the teams are planned for December 2026, with the second batch to follow in January 2027. Lando Norris also watched the presentation of the new car: The Formula 1 world champion will be represented in the junior series with his own team in the future.
