How the conflict over Maverick Vinales reveals the biggest KTM weakness

– The bitter dispute between KTM and Maverick Vinales is the latest episode of what several riders and managers in the MotoGP scene describe as a lack of empathy and an overly aggressive negotiation strategy. These factors have repeatedly impaired the relationship between KTM and the company’s riders.

The excitement when KTM secured the services of Johann Zarco for the 2019 MotoGP season was only surpassed by the shock caused by Zarco’s sudden dismissal just a few months later. As the season was already in full swing, the Frenchman had to realize that he could neither adapt to the RC16 nor to the company’s way of working.

The Zarco episode was the first clear sign of KTM’s idiosyncratic approach to rider management. The Mattighofen-based manufacturer views its riders as its most prominent employees and expects full commitment in return.

The conflict over Zarco proved to be just the beginning of a series of difficult separations in the following six years. The most recent concerns Vinales, who is now likely facing the last races of his MotoGP career.

Vinales waited until the German Grand Prix – the last race before the summer break on the 2026 MotoGP calendar – to publicly question how he had been treated. The Spaniard criticized what he called a lack of humanity. Although he had previously been led to believe that he would be promoted to the KTM factory team for the upcoming season, he now finds himself completely without a motorcycle for 2027.

His shoulder injury sustained at the 2025 German Grand Prix has affected Vinales’ competitiveness throughout the first half of the 2026 season – precisely during the period when most of the rider market for 2027 was already settled.

KTM has signed Alex Marquez and Fabio Di Giannantonio as the new rider duo for its factory team. The Spaniard and the Italian, both moving from Ducati customer teams, will succeed Pedro Acosta and Brad Binder. At Tech3-KTM, Senna Agius will apparently be deployed as Luca Marini’s teammate. If this happens, it will mean, on the one hand, that Enea Bastianini moves to Trackhouse-Aprilia.

On the other hand, it would mean that Vinales would have to come to terms with completely leaving the championship. If this happens, it would mark the end of a 15-year career in the motorcycle world championship. The highlights of this career were the Moto3 title win in 2013 and, last but not least, 10 MotoGP victories with three manufacturers: Suzuki, Yamaha, Aprilia.

The low points in Vinales’ career include the controversial split from his Moto3 team during the Malaysia weekend in 2012, the extraordinary incident at the 2021 Austrian Grand Prix that ultimately led to his dismissal from Yamaha, as well as his increasingly bitter dispute with KTM.

According to Vinales, the signals he received from KTM during the winter had convinced him that he would be promoted to the factory team for 2027. But as his shoulder problems affected his results on the track and KTM focused on overcoming the financial crisis that had nearly driven the company to collapse, communication gradually broke down.

Vinales learned from the media that Alex Marquez and Di Giannantonio had been signed. When he asked for clarification, the new Tech3 management under Günther Steiner presented him with a contract that the Spaniard himself described as “very detrimental to my interests.” The clearest confirmation came when Vinales was not invited to participate in the test of the KTM prototype for 2027 in Brno in mid-June.

“I have already come to terms with the fact that I probably won’t race in MotoGP anymore. I don’t want to stay here at KTM. They sent me a contract, I signed it, and two weeks later they told me it was invalid,” Vinales said at the Sachsenring weekend, just before the summer break.

Regardless of the details of the situation around Vinales, no MotoGP manufacturer has experienced as many painful separations from riders as KTM. Between the disputes with Zarco and Vinales, there were similar conflicts with Remy Gardner, Iker Lecuona, and Raul Fernandez. Managers who have repeatedly negotiated with KTM have repeatedly cited the same underlying problem.

“A lack of empathy,” several of these rider managers explain to Motorsport.com Spain, a sister platform of Motorsport-Total.com in the Motorsport Network. One of these managers goes into more detail, saying: “The problem is that KTM always wants to have all the trump cards on its side when dealing with riders. That goes too far. It inevitably puts the other side in a very weak position.”

This obvious lack of consideration for the human side has occasionally led to unusual situations. In 2024, KTM signed five riders even though it only had four MotoGP bikes on the grid.

This decision ultimately accelerated Pol Espargaro’s withdrawal from full-time racing after his serious injuries in Portimao 2023. And the fact that Espargaro was no longer a regular rider in 2024, in turn, enabled Pedro Acosta to make his debut in the premier class.

“That was a complete management error by KTM,” Espargaro admitted at the time. “I don’t like to criticize the manufacturer I work for, who pays me and takes care of me. But what happened revealed many flaws in the way contracts and riders are handled.”

Pit Beirer

In conversations with managers who have negotiated with KTM, one person and two contract clauses dominate the discussion. The first is Pit Beirer, the company’s motorsport director. The former motocross rider, paralyzed from the waist down since a crash at the 2003 Bulgarian Grand Prix, is widely respected for his resilience in rebuilding his life. Those who have negotiated with him also describe Beirer at the negotiating table as uncompromising.

KTM’s standard MotoGP contracts also reflect this philosophy. They are usually structured as a two-year contract with an option for a third year, with the option only exercisable by the manufacturer before a specified deadline. This allowed KTM to bind both Bastianini and Vinales until June 30 before ultimately deciding not to activate the option for a third year in both cases.

Since the MotoGP rider market for 2027 is moving unusually fast, this timing has left Vinales practically without realistic alternatives. In addition, KTM generally reserves the right to match any external offer received by one of the team’s riders on the same terms. Unless this clause was explicitly removed during negotiations.

Motorsport.com Spain assumes that Pedro Acosta succeeded in removing this provision when agreeing to his recent contract extension, which consequently paved the way for his move to Ducati for the 2027 season.
