Since the prototype classes GTP and LMP2 are on break, the grand touring cars receive undivided attention and compete for the overall victory. Important championship points are at stake before the last two races in Indianapolis and Braselton (Road Atlanta) in the championship.
The Virginia International Raceway dates back to 1957 but was closed in 1974 due to the oil crisis. The facility was only reopened in March 2000, and from 2002 the Grand-Am series visited Alton. In 2012, the American Le Mans Series moved in. After its merger with Grand-Am to form IMSA, the race became a pure GT event.
The hallmark of VIR was for a long time the huge oak tree in the Oak Tree Corner (Turn 12) named after it. The tree fell victim to a severe storm in July 2013.
