– After the Indianapolis 500 as the absolute highlight of the season, the IndyCar series continues at a fast pace. The next race of the season is scheduled for the coming weekend, but on completely different terrain. The Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix takes place on the tight street circuit in Detroit, which is filled with countless bumps.

In the 2026 IndyCar calendar, Detroit is the eighth of 18 season races and the fourth of six street races. The current configuration of the street circuit in Detroit, Michigan, has only existed since 2023. So this weekend will be only the fourth time racing on the 2.6-kilometer layout with just ten corners.

Characteristic of the current downtown course in Detroit—apart from the numerous bumps and different track surfaces—is the long straight after turn 2, where the start takes place, as well as the immediately following hairpin (turn 3), which is considered the best overtaking spot. But it is not least the extremely tight second part of the lap that makes Detroit a real challenge.

Mick Schumacher achieved the best result of his still young IndyCar career at the recent street race (Long Beach), finishing 17th. At the Indy 500 last weekend, Schumacher finished 18th and was thus the best rookie.

Whether Schumacher will improve on Sunday in Detroit will mainly depend on two factors: first, how quickly he can find a rhythm on the unfamiliar street circuit, and second, whether he can avoid incidents in the 100-lap race, which are again expected this year.

The current street circuit in Detroit is basically located on the grounds where the original downtown circuit was once laid out. This was used by Formula 1 from 1981 to 1988, then by the CART series from 1989 to 1991. From 1992 to 2022, the Detroit Grand Prix was held not in the city center but on the nearby island “Belle Isle.” Since 2023, the current downtown layout has been used.

The team in which Mick Schumacher is one of three full-time drivers, namely Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing (RLL), has yet to make a big impact on the current Detroit layout. The team has not yet achieved a top-10 result on the current layout. However, on the much smoother layout on “Belle Isle,” the Rahal team has achieved three wins: Bobby Rahal won in 1992, and Graham Rahal won twice in the 2017 double-header.

In the 2026 IndyCar series, 25 drivers from ten different teams are registered. All 25 cars have a so-called charter, which entitles and obliges them to start at all races.
