– Through no fault of his own, Mick Schumacher (RLL-Honda) was eliminated at the season opener of the IndyCar series in St. Petersburg. The son of Formula 1 legend Michael Schumacher was involved in a start accident through no fault of his own and is out.

The accident occurred in Turn 4 of the first lap, the first real braking point on the track. Schumacher had started 21st and could no longer avoid an accident between Sting Ray Robb (Juncos-Hollinger-Chevrolet) and Santino Ferrucci (Foyt-Chevrolet) and was taken out of the race along with both of them.
According to initial replays, Robb misjudged his braking, which meant Ferrucci could not turn in. Schumacher was still to the left of Ferrucci and was also dragged into the disaster.

In an initial interview with FOX, which had to be cut short due to a microphone problem, Ferrucci was harsh on Robb: “It’s a 100-lap race with three stops. Everyone has different strategies. There’s no reason for such maneuvers on the first lap.”
