– The United States of America celebrate themselves with an IndyCar race. The Freedom 250 is a symbolic, one-time race in the capital of the USA, Washington D.C. It came about due to the connections of Roger Penske to US President Donald Trump. And the race can be seen on German free TV on More than Sports TV!

The 2.736 kilometer or 1.7 mile long course, which is shorter than the oval in Indianapolis, serves as the backdrop for spectacular, patriotic images and is therefore much more than just a race for the 2026 IndyCar series. It serves to promote the national identity of the United States of America, where patriotism is highly valued.
The track includes the National Archives, the National Gallery of Art, and two other museums and runs directly in front of the Capitol. There are concerns from a non-profit organization for the preservation of historic buildings that vibrations from accidents, flying debris, and the sound waves of the engines could cause damage to the historic buildings around the track.
Nevertheless, the race also counts as a regular points event for the 2026 IndyCar series. Ironically, at the big race celebrating the USA, a Spaniard, Alex Palou, could win his fifth title in six years. He would need a lead of 162 points to leave as champion.
It is possible, but depends on the placements of Kyle Kirkwood, David Malukas, Christian Lundgaard, and Patricio “Pato” O’Ward. Calculating this would be too complex given the many bonus points available.
Mick Schumacher recently impressed in Markham with good speed but then made an annoying mistake. Especially with regard to a possible cockpit at Meyer Shank Racing in 2027, where Yuki Tsunoda has emerged as a surprising contender, a strong race on the street circuit in the District of Columbia is really important for Schumacher now.

Like Markham, Washington D.C. is a new track on the calendar, so Schumacher as a rookie has no disadvantage in terms of experience. It is the last street circuit on the calendar. The first laps in the simulator, however, remind more of an airfield course than a tight guardrail channel due to the width of the track.
Due to the compromises that the race in the US capital entails, the Freedom 250 will take place over only two days. This was also the case recently in Markham, although there it was involuntary after the track was not ready on training Friday.

The good news: The race will be broadcast free-to-air in Germany! More than Sports TV has the rights because the pay TV channel Motorvision+ is occupied with the simultaneous IMSA SportsCar Championship race in Virginia.

Entry list IndyCar Washington D.C 2026
In the 2026 IndyCar series, 25 drivers from ten different teams are registered. All 25 cars have a so-called charter, which entitles them to start all races but also obliges them to do so. Guest starters in the form of additional entries are still allowed at all races until the end of the 2026 season, from 2027 only at the Indy 500.
