Marc Marquez raves about Alex: "My best friend and teammate"

– The Marquez brothers have been considered an extraordinary duo in the MotoGP paddock for years – both in terms of sport and personally. In the Spanish podcast Tengo un Plan, Marc Marquez speaks openly about the special relationship with his younger brother Alex and makes clear how closely connected they are.

“Alex is my brother, my best friend, and my best teammate,” said Marc Marquez. The two would travel, train, and race together.

Especially the past year, when Marc became world champion and Alex vice-champion, the Spaniard describes as “historic” and “almost impossible to repeat.” At the same time, he emphasizes that both continue to perform “at a very high level.”

How Alex Marquez helped his injured brother

Often, it’s about things that happen unconsciously. Marc recalls his long, difficult injury period and the role Alex played at that time.

“He helped me without knowing it,” says the Ducati star. His brother actually “did nothing,” but still helped him enormously by keeping him connected to the world of motorcycle racing. “I followed the races as if I were there myself because Alex was there,” explains Marc.

Without his brother, he probably would have watched much less MotoGP because it would have been painful for him to experience the races only as a spectator. “Thanks to him, I never lost the connection to motorcycle racing. Such details make the difference,” emphasizes the 33-year-old.

Especially remarkable: despite direct competition, there seems to be no envy between the brothers. On the contrary. Marc openly admits that he sometimes enjoys his brother’s successes even more than his own. “Often, I am happier when he wins than when I win,” the Spaniard confesses.

Especially emotional for him was the result at the 2025 Catalonia Grand Prix, when Alex won and Marc finished second. “I celebrated that more than Aragon, where I won and he was second,” the world champion recalls.

“It’s a different feeling, but one I like better,” Marc continues. Perhaps that is simply because he experienced this situation less often.

Alex Marquez driving force behind the Gresini switch

How great the trust between them is also shows, according to Marc, in the switch to Gresini and Ducati. Alex had expressly advised him at the time to take the step. “Someone who didn’t wish the best for his brother would have said: Don’t come here.” Instead, Alex encouraged him.

Even during their joint title fight, both continued to openly exchange information. “We told each other what we tried, which tire we started with, and what strategies we used,” says Marc. This only works because both genuinely rejoice in each other’s success.

Marquez becomes emotional when it comes to the public perception of his brother. Asked if it bothers him that Alex is often only seen as “Marc Marquez’s brother,” he answers clearly and unequivocally: “Yes, very much.”

Marc especially praises the mental strength of his younger brother in this context. After all, Alex became a double world champion (2014 in Moto3 and 2019 in Moto2), yet many do not sufficiently recognize his achievements.

“Maybe I have a little more talent,” admits Marc. “But in work ethic, willingness to sacrifice, and commitment, Alex might even have more than me.”

That’s exactly why they benefit from each other. When they train together, Alex learns from him, and at the same time, he himself takes things from his brother. “We nourish each other,” Marc describes their special bond.

What impresses him especially is that Alex has gone his own way despite all comparisons: “He has had a sporting career in which much of what he achieved was not sufficiently appreciated.” But the crucial thing is that Alex never let that influence him and “kept delivering.”
