– “I don’t have to look around. I know where I will be.” – Mick Schumacher makes it clear in response to Motorsport.com USA, a sister edition of Motorsport-Total.com in the Motorsport Network, that his sporting IndyCar future is not in question.

The son of Formula 1 legend Michael Schumacher presents himself relaxed and composed before the start of the race weekend in Washington D.C. (All info about the race including free TV!) despite the accident in Markham putting him under pressure. Regardless of the rumors about Yuki Tsunoda, who is also competing for his preferred cockpit at Meyer Shank Racing, he sees himself on track for 2027.
“Well, it’s still the same. We continue these talks and the plan is very clear to stay here,” explains the German. When asked if he feels he still has to prove himself during the season to secure a contract for next year, Schumacher answers decisively: “No. People know what I can do, and I’m sure it’s just a matter of time.”

Schumacher is associated with car #66 at Meyer Shank Racing. This car is driven this year by Marcus Armstrong, who will switch to #60 in 2027, which Felix Rosenqvist is leaving behind.
Schumacher is considered the favorite for the cockpit but has to compete against several other drivers. He has the edge over most because no other IndyCar driver on the market brings a similar combination of potential and backing as the German. And Schumacher has repeatedly emphasized that he wants to stay in the IndyCar series.
Then Yuki Tsunoda appeared on the radar earlier this week. The Japanese driver is now first racing in Formula 1 at Zandvoort after Isack Hadjar injured his hand.
If it doesn’t work out for Mick Schumacher at Meyer Shank Racing, cockpits are still available at Juncos Hollinger Racing, Dale Coyne Racing, and A.J. Foyt Enterprises.
Walls in Markham a safety risk
The 27-year-old describes his accident in Markham as “unfortunate.” Even during the race, the walls on the new street circuit, which replaces the race in Toronto, came under criticism. Louis Foster and Kyle Kirkwood, who retired due to similar accidents as Schumacher, agreed with him that the missing rounding is too dangerous.

“At the end of the day, we all have the same problem, right? These walls are a bit unpredictable because sometimes they protrude a bit more than they should. And I think, in our case, it was just unfortunate for all three of us,” says Mick Schumacher.
“That’s simply because these walls knock the steering wheel out of your hands when you touch them. That potentially carries the risk of injuries that really aren’t necessary nowadays. Hopefully, we can improve that for next year,” he demands.
Cultural program in Washington D.C.
In Washington D.C., he can now quickly make amends for Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing at the race celebrating the 250th anniversary of the United States of America, although signs point to a farewell from the team.
So far, his experience with the US capital was limited to the international airport. Accordingly, he used Thursday for a cultural program.
“We arrived yesterday and I was able to go to the museum. The track was not quite finished yet. I didn’t have my accreditation badge with me. I forgot it, so I wasn’t allowed on the track. But I’ll check it out today,” says the RLL driver.
He is looking forward to the race: “I’m just excited to have a really good race here in D.C. It will be very exciting, many people are expected, and I’m sure it will be great for the IndyCar series.”
When asked about the special feeling in the US capital, Schumacher adds: “I mean, this is a unique thing, right? It’s great to be here and be a part of it. As I said, I think this is a fantastic opportunity for the IndyCar series to get even more attention in America, as it deserves, because it is a great championship.”
