– Mick Schumacher sees the symbolic Freedom 250 in Washington D.C. as a huge opportunity to present the IndyCar series to a larger audience. Before the race, which celebrates the 250th anniversary of the United States of America, the 27-year-old emphasizes the special radiance of the weekend to the US broadcaster Newsmax.

“This is an opportunity for the IndyCar series, but not just for the series itself, but for all the drivers participating this weekend,” explains Schumacher. “We can show out there what the IndyCar series really is and what we are made of. It is one of the most incredible racing series ever. We are at a place the series truly deserves.”
The race is in a special focus of the public in the USA due to its symbolism, much like the Indianapolis 500. IndyCar hopes to attract new fan groups with the race and make the fascination of motorsport accessible to people who otherwise never engage with this topic. Nothing is better suited than using US patriotism as a driving force.
IndyCar vs. Formula 1: Covering a broader spectrum
In the interview, the former Formula 1 driver also explains the fundamental differences between Formula 1 and the US formula cars, especially regarding equal opportunities in the field.
“It is basically the same type of vehicle with front and rear wings as well as a carbon fiber chassis,” Schumacher compares. “The main difference is that one car can drive over 380 km/h on an oval and has to be extremely efficient, while Formula 1 mainly races on road and street circuits. We have to cover a much greater variety of race tracks.”
In addition, the German highlights the IndyCar series regulations: “We have a spec chassis and mostly the same material. There are some differences in the dampers, but most things are extremely close together.”

“That means it really depends on the driver to make the biggest difference. In Formula 1, on the other hand, it depends much more on whether you are in the right car to be able to compete at the front.”
The course in the US capital presents the drivers with a special challenge on race day over the distance of 147 laps – not only because of the length of the race but also especially because of the enormous bumps. Schumacher nevertheless looks forward to the physical and mental strain in front of the historic backdrops of the city.
“The track is quite narrow in some places, very wide in others. That changes the dynamics and can lead to great duels, but definitely also brings tricky conditions,” analyzes the RLL driver. “147 laps are a lot. That will test our driving skills, our talent, but also our fitness.”

For the race, the German has set a clear goal: “We want to fight for the top positions right at this historic moment.” That will be a long way, as he starts from position 20. But in IndyCars, everything is possible especially because of the yellow phases. The start of the Freedom 250 is at 19:13 CEST.
