Mick Schumacher takes over sponsorship for world-famous panda bear

– Before the start of the first IndyCar race on the new street circuit in Markham, Mick Schumacher makes a moving gesture off the track. The Rahal-Letterman-Lanigan driver from the IndyCar series has taken on the symbolic sponsorship of a small world celebrity from the zoo world: the red panda “Poppy” from the nearby Toronto Zoo.

Poppy is a real icon in the zoo world: The female cub was born in June 2024 and already touched the hearts of hundreds of thousands of animal lovers shortly after birth. Her story is marked by setbacks: both her twin brother and her mother Sakura died unexpectedly a few weeks after birth.

Since the survival rate of red panda cubs in the first year of life is only around 40 percent even in human care, the keepers at the Toronto Zoo started intensive hand-rearing around the clock. The panda girl, initially lovingly called “Biggie,” fought her way through.

In November 2024, more than 6,500 people finally voted in a worldwide online poll for her official name: “Poppy” – in reference to the floral heritage of her mother Sakura (Japanese for cherry blossom). Since then, she has been regarded as an international symbol of hope and successful species conservation.

Animal adoption as a symbolic gesture

Such an animal sponsorship does not mean that the red panda now passes into the hands of Mick Schumacher or even travels with the IndyCar series entourage from race to race. Rather, it is a financial and ideal partnership in which the animal remains in its familiar and professional environment in the zoo.

The contributions go directly into the demanding care. Red pandas mainly feed on fresh bamboo as well as special nutrient biscuits, which poses a logistical and financial challenge for zoos. In addition, the funds support veterinary examinations and enclosure expansions.

Beyond individual care, sponsorships at the Toronto Zoo have global impact: the facility cooperates closely with the Red Panda Network to finance conservation projects directly in the natural habitat of the Eastern Himalayas. According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the red panda is considered highly endangered, with an estimated 2,500 to 10,000 animals remaining in the wild.

Schumacher’s sponsorship for Poppy is not exclusive, so other people can continue to take financial responsibility for the ambassador of her endangered species.

For Mick Schumacher, the weekend thus begins with positive “vibes.” Sportingly, these can only help him, because after trouble with missing engine power in Portland, he now has to strike back on a street circuit – the kind of race tracks that have so far suited him least in the IndyCar series. The race starts on Sunday at 18:22 CEST. (All info about the IndyCar race in Markham)
