Nico Rosberg warns Antonelli about the mental pitfalls in the World Championship battle

Antonelli has experienced an impressive season so far. The Mercedes driver leads the drivers’ standings and became the youngest driver in Formula 1 history to take the championship lead. However, according to Rosberg, the prospect of the first world championship title could become an additional mental burden.

“Antonelli has driven incredibly well,” says Rosberg ahead of the Dutch Grand Prix. “That is world-class level. It’s amazing. It’s his second year in F1, incredible.”

Rosberg knows the psychological pressure of a title fight

The German is one of the few drivers who can assess from personal experience the mental challenges a world championship fight brings. In 2016, Rosberg prevailed after an intense season against his then Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton and won his only world championship title. A few days later, he surprisingly ended his career.

Precisely for this reason, Rosberg attaches great importance to the psychological factor in the title race. He believes that sooner or later Antonelli could be confronted with the same thoughts that many drivers experience when the long-awaited dream of the world championship suddenly becomes tangible.

“But he is also only human,” explains Rosberg. “Everyone in his situation starts to reflect during the season: ‘My goodness, my dream is within reach,’ and the demons in your head tell you: ‘Don’t mess this up, you can only lose it now.'”

When the “demons” in the head get louder

According to the 2016 world champion, this is exactly one of the greatest dangers of a title fight. While the physical demands in Formula 1 are visible, many decisive battles take place in the drivers’ heads.

Rosberg describes a process in which thoughts about the possible title win increasingly take up space and thus make it more difficult to concentrate on the actual task: “It repeats and gets louder and louder, and you start to suffer from it and think: ‘Oh God, I hope I don’t mess this up.'”

For Rosberg, such thoughts are not theoretical considerations but experiences he had during his world championship season.

Own experiences from the world championship duel with Hamilton

The German admitted that the pressure in the 2016 title fight noticeably affected him. The constant confrontation with the possibility of becoming world champion mentally taxed him so much that it also affected his performance in the car.

“As soon as you think about these things, it takes capacity away from the ability to drive 100 percent,” says Rosberg. “I went through that massively, and that’s why there was no chance for me to get a pole position or win a race in my last four races. I couldn’t do it. My brain was completely exhausted.”

Rosberg’s accounts thus provide a rare insight into the psychological challenges of a Formula 1 title fight. While Antonelli has shown hardly any weaknesses on the track so far, according to the German, it will be especially the mental side of the duel for the world championship that will decide whether the Mercedes driver can defend his top position until the end of the season.

Currently, Antonelli leads the drivers’ standings with 224 points. Lewis Hamilton follows in second place with 171 points, George Russell is in third place with 168 points.
