(Motorsport-Total.com/Motor1) – The ability for bidirectional charging is standard equipment in many newer electric cars. Tesla now also offers a corresponding adapter for the Model Y charging port. This enables Vehicle to Load (V2L), but not for all powertrains and only for newer US models.

In the US Tesla shop, there is recently a Tesla Outlet Adapter for 80 US dollars. It can also be ordered as an extra when ordering the vehicle. According to the description, it can supply electrical devices with up to 2.4 kW (120 volts and 20 amps) from the traction battery. The adapter is compatible with the premium versions of the Model Y (including the Model Y L), the Model Y Performance, and the Cybertruck. Apparently, the base versions of the Model Y do not have a bidirectional onboard charger. According to Teslarati, only vehicles after the “Juniper” facelift are supported.
To use the adapter, you also need the “Mobile Connector” of the third generation. This is standard in the US for the premium versions and the performance variant. It is normally used to charge the Tesla at a household socket. On the vehicle side, the cable has the US-typical Tesla charging plug (NACS plug). This is connected to a controller to which adapters for various sockets can be connected, including the usual three-pin sockets in the USA.
Alternatively, the outlet adapter can also be connected to the controller. On the other side, there are two three-pin sockets for using electrical devices. As an example, Tesla shows a compressor for inflating tires in its US shop.
According to Teslarati, the V2L function has been available for the Model Y Performance and Cybertruck for some time; it is only new for the premium variants of the Model Y. The adapter has been available in China for a year.

In Germany, the Mobile Connector is not standard on any Model Y variant, but is available as an extra or accessory for 205 euros. Matching adapters for local Schuko household sockets, for blue sockets with 16 or 32 amps, as well as for Italian, Swiss, and British sockets are also offered. However, a V2L adapter is (still) not available. Whether Tesla will offer a version for Europe is still open. The American adapter is probably not practical here, as it only offers American sockets and is designed only for 120 volts.

In summary
The V2L function is a nice feature if you want to connect a cooler or a grill at a picnic or charge an e-bike. This is now possible with the higher versions of the US Model Y, but not yet with the German Model Y. The technical effort would be limited: According to the American manual, the Mobile Connector delivers 100 to 240 volts. So only a corresponding adapter with two Schuko sockets is missing. Provided, of course, that the Model Y versions built in Grünheide have a bidirectional onboard charger.
