Rule Violation Tire Pressure: The Penalties in the MotoGP Season 2026 at a Glance

– The system for monitoring the prescribed minimum air pressure in the front tire of MotoGP bikes will enter its fourth year in 2026, with it being the third year that penalties are issued for violations of the regulations.

MotoGP tire supplier Michelin responded to the increased load on the front tire due to developments in aerodynamics and ride-height systems. If the prescribed tire pressure is undercut, the mechanical grip increases temporarily – especially during braking and cornering. But the downside is risky: too low tire pressure can, in extreme cases, lead to structural damage to the tire.

This is exactly where the rule applies: the prescribed minimum pressure in the front tire is standard at 1.80 bar. Track-specific adjustments can lead Michelin engineers to raise the minimum value.

Every MotoGP bike is equipped with standardized tire pressure sensors that record data in real time. The teams have no way to manipulate these measurement systems or bypass them through their own calibrations.

The race control receives the data in real time. If there are anomalies, the sensors, calibration, and data are checked by officials on the respective motorcycle after the race. Only then might a penalty be issued.

The rule stipulates that the minimum pressure in the front tire must be maintained for a minimum duration during the race: 60 percent of the total distance in the main race (Grand Prix), 30 percent in the sprint.

For the teams, this results in a delicate balancing act. A rider starting from the front row with a clear track must calculate with a higher initial pressure, as possibly no heat from a preceding motorcycle increases the pressure in the tire.

Conversely, a rider in the pack can take greater risks with a lower starting pressure – but must be careful that the pressure does not fall below the critical threshold for too long during the race and does not rise too much to avoid performance problems.

If a rider completes too many laps below the prescribed minimum duration, there have been time penalties since 2024: 16 seconds in the main race and 8 seconds in the sprint. These values are chosen so that they have significant effects on the race result.
