– The World Rally Championship (WRC) can look forward to further growth. As the second private tuner, RMC Motorsport has officially announced plans to develop a vehicle for the highest category of the World Championship. The experienced Spanish team will construct a car according to the new WRC27 regulations in cooperation with the Spanish Automobile Federation (RFEDA). The project was announced on the sidelines of the Canary Islands Rally last weekend.

RMC was founded in 2004 by Roberto Mendez and has almost ten years of experience in developing Group N5 vehicles. The company, based in Villablino in northern Spain, will independently design, manufacture, and further develop the new vehicle. According to the regulations, RMC is obliged to build at least ten of these WRC27 vehicles and offer them for sale to other private teams.
“This project represents the professional culmination of RMC’s journey,” explains team principal Mendez. “With the extensive experience we have gained in building N5 vehicles, which are in use on several continents, we are now approaching the opportunity to develop the new FIA 2027 Rally1 car with great enthusiasm. The support of the RFEDA, led by Manuel Avino, is key to the project’s success. We are working intensively and will soon be able to announce more detailed technical information about the new car.”
Historic Support from the Spanish Federation
With this commitment, the RFEDA becomes the first FIA member club to actively support a constructor’s entry into the WRC. One of the goals is to pave a clearer path for Spanish talents to reach the top of world rallying. Avino, FIA Vice-President for Sport in Europe and President of the Spanish Federation, sees this as a great opportunity for Spain.
“We could not miss the opportunity offered by the FIA to involve tuners like RMC in the production of 2027 cars,” says Avino. “This agreement with RMC also fulfills several goals I set at the beginning of my term at the RFEDA. As President, it fills me with great pride to be part of a project that will undoubtedly strengthen the quality and recognition of the Spanish motorsport industry, while also serving as a reference and inspiration for our drivers in their sporting careers.”

RMC thus follows the Belgian team Project Rally One as the second private provider. On the manufacturer side, only Toyota has so far confirmed plans for a WRC27 car. From the upcoming season, these vehicles will compete together with the current Rally2 cars in the top class of the WRC.
The FIA also praises the Spanish initiative. Malcolm Wilson, Deputy FIA President for Sport, explains: “The project led by RFEDA and RMC is another encouraging sign for the future of the World Rally Championship.”
“Under the leadership of FIA President Mohammed bin Sulayem, the FIA has worked hard to adopt a set of regulations that allows independent projects like this to compete against manufacturers on equal terms. It is rewarding to see that this work is attracting new participants to the championship.”

Wilson also emphasizes the uniqueness of the cooperation: “What makes this project particularly remarkable is the fact that it is supported by an FIA member club, which is a first for the World Championship and a clear sign of the federations’ confidence in the direction the WRC is taking.”
