Audi boss: A new R8 would be a "good idea"

(Motorsport-Total.com/Motor1) – Audi boss Gernot Döllner laughs heartily. He takes a break, smiles – and then says: “I am a big fan of the V8.” For us, that’s enough: such a statement opens the door for the return of the R8 at least a crack – and the hopes for it are probably closely linked to the Lamborghini Temerario.

While the round in Munich primarily focused on the upcoming RS 5 and Q9, the assembled press also asked Döllner about other topics: It was about more hybrid options, the global strategy, and even offroad models. But for a brief moment, it was about a possible future R8 – an idea that Döllner described as “good.”

The Audi R8 designed by Walter de Silva is already a supercar classic thanks to its shape and impressive engine. Yes, the V10 shared with the Lamborghini Gallardo and Huracán was and is a real experience. But if there could be a new R8, we would of course also be happy with an eight-cylinder.

“There are no restrictions with such an engine,” says Döllner with regard to the packaging possibilities of a V8. He adds that the Lamborghini Temerario has a great V8 – “10,000 rpm, biturbo, brilliant.”

Furthermore, Döllner praises the platform strategy in the VW Group and highlights the advantages of plug-in hybrids in the performance segment. This is by no means a confirmation that a new Audi R8 is coming. But anyone who heard Döllner’s laughter and saw his smile would have felt their supercar heart beat noticeably faster that day.

Motor1 opinion: Audi wants to close the gap between pure combustion engines and electric cars more strongly. For this, more hybrid models are needed. And a plug-in hybrid in a future supercar flagship could ignite additional enthusiasm for further models in the lineup. The new RS 5 is exciting, the upcoming RS 6 certainly will be too – but an R8 based on the Temerario would be a sensation.
