This is how Domenicali sees the future of Formula 1
Formula 1 boss Stefano Domenicali spoke before this weekend about how he sees the future of the premier class. For example, sprints will continue to be part of Formula 1 in the future.
“Young people increasingly appreciate a weekend where something already happens on Friday that counts. For long-time fans – and I count myself among them – a training session can also be interesting,” he emphasizes.
“But for the broad audience, a qualifying on Friday already means there is more relevant content,” explains the Italian.
However, Domenicali rules out a scenario like in MotoGP, with a short race every weekend. “There will be less than half” of the events, he clarifies.

Honda relies on “countermeasures”
In Zandvoort, Honda recently brought a new engine and chief engineer Shintaro Orihara explains before Monza with satisfaction: “As expected from our measurements, we have noticed a performance increase.”
“On the other hand, we have found that there is still room for improvement in terms of driving behavior,” he also admits and emphasizes: “That is definitely the point where we need to improve.”
This is supposed to happen already this weekend. The Japanese reveals: “At HRC in Sakura, some tests were carried out to improve our systems and thus achieve better driving behavior.”
“The focus this weekend will therefore be on checking these countermeasures in Monza,” says Orihara.
Updates
We already talked earlier about the new parts this weekend. However, the FIA’s list only includes aerodynamic updates. And in Monza, there are also some other innovations.
For example, Ferrari has a new engine for the home race and Audi has revised the gearbox. This could also play a role this weekend.
Formula 2: Best time for Alpine junior
Unlike Formula 3, Formula 2 is still a bit away from its season finale. After Monza and Madrid, Baku, Qatar, and Abu Dhabi are still on the calendar – although there are known justified doubts about the last two races.
Especially in training, Alpine junior Alexander Dunne set the best time, although after the Herta crash, no more laps could be driven.
In Formula 2, Red Bulls’ Nikola Tsolov (167 points), Alpine’s Gabriele Minì (147), and Ferrari junior Rafael Camara (145) are fighting for the title. Dunne (108) still has outsider chances as fourth.
Friday drivers
Don’t be surprised if some regular drivers are missing in FP1. Today, four Friday drivers are starting: Luke Browning (Williams), Paul Aron (Alpine), Ayumu Iwasa (Red Bull), and Colton Herta (Cadillac).
Alexander Albon, Pierre Gasly, Max Verstappen, and Sergio Perez are sitting out initially. They will return to the car in the second training.
By the way, Herta did not have the best start to the weekend. He crashed in Formula 2 training…
Updates
The FIA has just published the mandatory list of all updates this weekend. Not surprisingly, many teams have brought a new rear wing with particularly low drag.
In fact, ten of the eleven Formula 1 teams have brought new parts, only Audi is missing from the list.

Formula 3: Best time for Williams junior
Besides Formula 1, Formula 3 and Formula 2 are also on track in Monza this weekend. The smallest class has already completed its training in the morning, where Williams junior Alessandro Giusti set the best time.
In Formula 3, it is already a decisive weekend, because after Monza the season finale in Madrid is already scheduled. This year, Ugo Ugochukwu (122 points) and Audi junior Freddie Slater (130) are fighting for the title.

Speaking of Antonelli: The championship leader celebrated his 20th birthday between Zandvoort and Monza. In good Formula 1 tradition, there were not only congratulations yesterday but also cake in the face:
60 years ago today …
… Ludovico Scarfiotti won his home race in Monza – and for Ferrari. However, at that time no one suspected that this would be the last Formula 1 win by an Italian in Monza to this day.
Theoretically, there was a good chance this year that there would finally be a first home win in Monza since 1966. But with the grid penalty, it will of course be difficult for Kimi Antonelli on Sunday…
How “bad” will Monza be?
Monza is one of the tracks on the calendar that reveals the weaknesses in the current Formula 1 regulations. Arvid Lindblad explains, for example: “I don’t think there will be big speed differences because simply no one has power.”
“Where should the speed difference come from?” says the rookie, adding: “If you use the boost, you win on a straight, but are extremely slow for the next three laps.”
“You could call it Jo-Jo racing, but I think it will just be very bad Jo-Jo racing. I’m not very optimistic,” admits the Racing Bulls driver.

Lawson back in the Red Bull
Another important piece of information right at the start of the weekend: Isack Hadjar is also not participating in Monza. He is still injured, so Liam Lawson will again sit alongside Max Verstappen in the Red Bull.
Yuki Tsunoda will take Lawson’s place at Racing Bulls again this time. Everything is like in Zandvoort.
Weather
As we do every weekend at the start, let’s take a look at the weather and see: Formula 1 fans in Monza should not hope for rain. It is supposed to stay dry on all three days.
On the contrary: The FIA has even issued an official heat warning for the race. Temperatures of up to 35 degrees are expected.

Antonelli starts last
Qualifying in Monza is only scheduled for tomorrow, but we already know one thing before a single car has driven this weekend: Championship leader Kimi Antonelli will start from the very back on Sunday.
The Italian has received a new engine and thus a grid penalty at his home race. Maybe his special helmet for motorcycle legend Valentino Rossi will bring luck and help in the comeback…
