Work on Stroll
Work is still being done on the front right of Lance Stroll’s Aston Martin on the grid. Is there a problem? Apart from that, everything is set for the first sprint in Canada.
Pit lane open
30 minutes to the start and the pit lane in Montreal is now open. In a sprint, drivers have only five minutes from now to make their way to the starting grid.
With just under 20 degrees air and around 30 degrees asphalt temperature, we have very similar conditions to yesterday. As already mentioned, no rain is in sight.
Pole as half the battle
Statistically, George Russell has the best chance to win the sprint. Of the last nine Formula 1 races in Canada, seven were won from pole position.
A Mercedes win is almost certain, as the last winner in Montreal from outside the front row was in 2014 – twelve years ago! Back then, Daniel Ricciardo won for Red Bull starting from P6.

Bottas also from the pit lane
And another update: Bottas also has to start from the pit lane for the same reason. That leaves only 18 of the 22 cars on the grid now…
More pit lane starts
Only 19 cars will be on the grid later. Besides Gasly, Bearman and Albon also have to start from the pit lane. Both cars also had their setup changed.
Albon doesn’t lose much as he couldn’t participate in the sprint qualifying yesterday anyway. Bearman, however, gives up at least P15. You can find the updated starting grid here.
F1 Academy: First podium for Paatz
Good news from a German perspective: Mathilda Paatz finished the F1 Academy race earlier in third place, securing her first podium in the women’s series. The win went to Red Bull-supported Alisha Palmowski.
Later today (00:05 CEST) the second F1 Academy race will take place.
Gasly starts from the pit lane
Here is the explanation for Alpine breaking the curfew. The team states: “The team exceeded the curfew last night to continue working on Pierre’s car.”
“As a result, the team took Pierre’s car out of parc fermé to replace parts and adjust the setup, meaning Pierre will start today’s sprint race from the pit lane.”

Marko: World Championship “almost decided”
Helmut Marko is watching Formula 1 this year only as an “outsider”. Still, he has a clear favorite in the championship fight. “They have the best package,” he says to oe24 about Mercedes.
“If the updates [in Canada] also work, the championship is almost decided,” fears the Austrian. But who would prevail in an internal team duel between Antonelli and Russell?
“Antonelli’s ease on track speaks for him,” says Marko about Antonelli. Russell, on the other hand, “has to strike back in Canada now. On the other hand, Antonelli lost significant performance at last year’s European races,” he recalls.
So everything is still open at the moment.
Curfew broken
Another mini-news from the paddock. Alpine broke the curfew last night. There is no penalty here either because the French team used their first of four allowed jokers this year.
The question remains why the curfew was broken. It might have something to do with the problem on Franco Colapinto’s car yesterday. The battery had to be changed after FP1.
Warning for Antonelli
The day in Formula 1 starts with a retrospective warning for Kimi Antonelli. The championship leader was too slow in one lap during the sprint qualifying yesterday and exceeded the maximum allowed time between the two safety car lines.
Since there were no mitigating circumstances, such as another car he had to slow down for, this was a rule violation for which the race stewards have now issued a warning.

Verstappen confirms: Will race Formula 1 in 2027
Max Verstappen will also compete in Formula 1 in 2027. He confirms to De Telegraaf that he will “definitely” be on the grid next year.
“Unless something crazy happens, but I don’t expect that. I hope everyone keeps their word. But I can confirm that I will stay in Formula 1,” says the Dutchman.
Whether he will race for Red Bull then remains open. “I would love to stay with Red Bull for the rest of my life, I’ve always said that,” Verstappen emphasizes.
At the same time, he is “not in a hurry” to make a decision.
Alain Prost attacked
Unpleasant news reaches us off the racetrack from Switzerland. The Blick reports that Formula 1 legend Alain Prost was attacked in his house in Nyon.
The four-time world champion was reportedly slightly injured. The perpetrators have not yet been caught. It is unknown what was stolen during the attack.

Will Mercedes get the start right?
Russell and Antonelli will start the sprint from P1 and P2. The polesitter reminds: “One of our biggest weaknesses this year has been starts. We have focused on improving them.”
“In the sprint, we have the chance to show that we have made progress,” says Russell, who warns: “If we don’t get off the line well, we know our competitors will take their chance.”
