– The long-standing legal conflict between McLaren and Chip Ganassi Racing over multi-time IndyCar champion Alex Palou has been officially settled. After the High Court in London had already ruled in favor of McLaren at the beginning of the year, both parties have now announced a final agreement.

In January, Palou was ordered to pay compensation of over twelve million US dollars to McLaren. This followed a five-week trial last year. Originally, the British racing team had demanded around 20 million US dollars after Palou broke a contract already signed for the 2024 season.
The dispute began when both McLaren and Ganassi claimed the Spaniard’s services for the 2023 season. It was initially agreed that Palou would stay with Ganassi, while simultaneously acting as a test driver for McLaren’s Formula 1 team, before moving permanently to McLaren’s IndyCar lineup in 2024.
But the 28-year-old surprisingly decided to stay with Ganassi. He justified this with a lack of confidence in the prospect of a Formula 1 cockpit at McLaren. Zak Brown’s team responded with the lawsuit to claim losses in sponsorship income, prize money, and recovery of driver salaries.
McLaren CEO Zak Brown expressed relief at the conclusion of the case: “I am very happy that we have reached a final agreement with Ganassi. I want to thank the [legal] team that worked on this case month after month. Now we can focus again on sporting competition and an exciting IndyCar season.”

Palou shows remorse: “Was poorly advised”
During the trial, Palou had claimed that Brown had given him hope for a regular Formula 1 cockpit for 2024 and suggested that the signing of Oscar Piastri would not affect his chances. Brown dismissed these statements as “completely absurd.”
Alex Palou is now clearly backtracking and accepts the court’s decision. He admits that McLaren fulfilled all contractual obligations. “I was being pulled in different directions at the time and had the wrong people around me who didn’t have my best interests at heart,” the Spaniard explains.
“Looking back, I should have gone directly to Zak. McLaren supported me in every way and even went beyond what was contractually agreed. I was never deceived.” Palou also regretted putting both organizations in a difficult position.

Team owner Chip Ganassi also spoke up: “I cannot condone what happened, but I am glad the matter is settled. I hope Alex has learned from this how important it is to have good advisors. I thank Zak and McLaren that we can put this topic behind us.”
