– Mick Schumacher has left Formula 1 behind and found a new home in the IndyCar series this year. Nevertheless, the German emphasizes that he would return to the premier class if a suitable offer came along.

“It would be a lie if I said that I don’t occasionally go back to Formula 1 times and think about what it was like to drive back then,” said the former Haas driver in an interview with sport.de.
His Formula 1 career was “of course a different time,” Schumacher explains. “But if an option were to come up again, I would naturally not say no. That’s definitely the case,” reveals the now 27-year-old.
Schumacher entered the premier class in 2021 as the reigning Formula 2 champion. In the inferior Haas VF-21, the then Ferrari junior did not score any championship points, but he had his teammate Nikita Mazepin under control for large parts of the year.

In his second Formula 1 season, it was exactly the opposite. Schumacher scored his first championship points, but finished the drivers’ world championship with 12:25 points behind his new teammate Kevin Magnussen.

For 2023, he did not receive a new contract with Haas and was replaced by Nico Hülkenberg. He then joined Mercedes as a reserve driver, but even through this path, he did not find a permanent cockpit in the premier class in the following years.
After driving for Alpine in the World Endurance Championship (WEC) in 2024 and 2025, he joined the IndyCar Series in 2026. “IndyCar is a big change from what I’ve experienced in motorsport so far,” he explains.
Schumacher has competed in five races there so far and, according to his own statement, still needs to “get used to it.” His best result to date is a 17th place. At the end of May, Schumacher will participate in the legendary Indy 500 for the first time.
