MotoGP Sachsenring 2026: Marquez equals an Agostini victory record

– Marc Marquez (Ducati) lived up to his reputation as the “King of the Sachsenring.” The reigning MotoGP world champion celebrated his tenth MotoGP victory at the German Grand Prix with authority. The Trackhouse-Aprilia duo Ai Ogura and Raul Fernandez took second and third places on the podium.

With around 261,000 fans over the entire weekend, a new attendance record was set at the Sachsenring. On Sunday alone, around 98,000 fans followed the Grand Prix.

At the start of the 30-lap race, Marc Marquez took the lead already in the first corner ahead of his brother Alex Marquez (Gresini-Ducati). Fabio Di Giannantonio (VR46-Ducati) fell back behind the Trackhouse duo to fifth place.

At the end of the first lap, Fernandez attacked his teammate and the two Trackhouse riders swapped third and fourth places. All 20 riders started with hard front and medium rear tires.

In the fourth lap, a co-favorite retired from the race. Di Giannantonio crashed in turn 10. This was his first retirement in a Grand Prix this season.

Initially, the race developed similarly to the sprint. Marc Marquez controlled the pace at the front and was followed by Alex Marquez. The Trackhouse duo Fernandez and Ogura remained within striking distance.

At the end of the ninth lap, Alex Marquez crashed while lying in second place in turn 13. The Gresini-Ducati with the special 2003 design lay damaged in the gravel trap. Alex Marquez was thus unable to repeat Sete Gibernau’s victory from back then.

Marquez untouchable after first third of the race

From the tenth lap, Marc Marquez led with a 1.3-second advantage over Fernandez. Ogura was another seven tenths behind, but the Assen winner came under pressure from Pedro Acosta (KTM) at this point.

The action then took place behind Marc Marquez, who controlled his pace at the front and celebrated his third win of the season. In the world championship, he improved to third place and is now only 18 points behind Jorge Martin (Aprilia).

With his tenth MotoGP victory at the Sachsenring, Marc Marquez equaled Giacomo Agostini’s win record on the same track. The Italian won ten times on the Finnish Imatra circuit.

Across all classes, Agostini and Marc Marquez have won the German Grand Prix a total of 13 times. This record of the Italian was thus also matched.

“I am overjoyed! It was a special weekend,” says Marc Marquez. “I was fully focused because, as I said on Thursday: If I still want a chance at the world championship title, I have to attack here.”

“And that’s what I did. The fact is, we have to strike when we feel strong. I am really extremely happy to have achieved ten MotoGP wins here at the Sachsenring. That is a special number. Many thanks to the entire audience, to all the fans!”

Trackhouse duel for second place

In the final phase, the Trackhouse duo fought a duel for second place. As so often, Ogura became faster in the final phase and increased the pressure on Raul Fernandez.

At the beginning of the 25th of 30 laps, Ogura braked past his teammate in turn 1 and took second place. Thus, Ogura goes into the summer break as second in the world championship and is only 14 points behind Martin (in the championship standings).

Acosta finished alone in fourth place. Behind him, a close battle raged in the final phase between Martin and Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati) for fifth place. Bagnaia attempted several attacks.

Martin rode defensively and was able to hold fifth place. The best Yamaha rider was Fabio Quartararo in seventh, followed by the best Honda with Luca Marini. The top 10 were completed by the two KTM riders Enea Bastianini (Tech3) and Brad Binder (to the results).

In positions eleven to fifteen came Diogo Moreira (LCR-Honda), Jack Miller (Pramac-Yamaha), Franco Morbidelli (VR46-Ducati), Alex Rins (Yamaha), and Toprak Razgatlioglu (Pamac-Yamaha).

After Di Giannantonio, Joan Mir was the second retirement of the race. In the seventh lap, the Honda rider retired due to a crash in turn 13. This was already his seventh retirement in a Grand Prix this season.

In the 22nd lap, Cal Crutchlow (LCR-Honda) crashed in turn 3. At this point, the 40-year-old was battling Razgatlioglu for the second to last place.

Four laps before the finish, Maverick Vinales (Tech3-KTM) went to the pits and retired. He had finished last in the sprint on Saturday.

The MotoGP now goes into the summer break. The next Grand Prix will take place from August 7 to 9 in Silverstone (Great Britain) (to the calendar).
